Chapter 16: Amazon RDS

Common Mistakes I See Students Make

These are the RDS mistakes I see after the lab: opening port 3306 to the world, using an IP instead of the endpoint, and forgetting to delete the instance. Read them once.

  • Opening port 3306 to 0.0.0.0/0 and turning on public access, because "localhost worked in Chapter 10".
  • Putting the EC2 private IP in the application instead of the RDS endpoint. After a reboot or a failover that IP is wrong. The endpoint stays right.
  • Connecting as root, or as wpuser@localhost. Those accounts are not on RDS. Use admin, or a user you created there.
  • Setting the security-group source to My IP after public access is No. The rule must point at the EC2 security group.
  • Restoring a snapshot and waiting for the old endpoint to change. Restore builds a new instance. Update the application.
  • Assuming a snapshot saved a parameter-group edit. It saved the data. Attach the parameter group again on restore.
  • Leaving the instance running, or stopping it and forgetting the 7-day automatic start.
  • Deleting the instance but leaving manual snapshots behind.
