16.8 Stop and delete
In short: Stop is under Actions, Stop temporarily (the wording may vary).
Stop is under Actions, Stop temporarily (the wording may vary). You must tick the acknowledgement that the instance starts again on its own after 7 days if you do not start it. RDS does this so the instance does not miss maintenance. While it is stopped you are not billed for instance hours, but storage is still charged, and so are manual snapshots. You cannot stop a read replica, or a primary that still has a read replica. Aurora is stopped as a cluster, not with this button.
Start brings the same instance back, with the same endpoint, the same security group and the same data.
Delete when the lab is over. If deletion protection is on, turn it off with Modify first. Then Actions, Delete. For this lab, decline the final snapshot and do not keep the automated backups. Otherwise those copies remain and keep being charged. Manual snapshots you took earlier are not deleted with the instance. Remove them under Snapshots if you do not need them.

The lab ends when you close the laptop. The RDS instance does not. Many students find the database still running two days later, and AWS starts a stopped instance again after 7 days. Stop it if you will continue tomorrow. When the lab is over, delete the manual snapshot too. Look at the Databases page once before you log out. Do not forget.

Lab laptop बंद केल्यावर संपतो. RDS instance बंद होत नाही. बरेच students ला database दोन दिवसांनंतर पण running सापडतो, आणि stop केलेला instance 7 दिवसांनी AWS परत start करतो. उद्या पुढे करायचे असेल तर stop करा. Lab संपल्यावर manual snapshot पण delete करा. Logout आधी Databases page एकदा बघा. बिलकुल विसरू नका.
