Chapter 18: Load Balancing

18.10 Classic Load Balancer

Why it is in the list at all

Old accounts still contain a Classic Load Balancer. Interviews still say the name. It was the original elastic load balancer: one listener for HTTP, HTTPS, TCP, or SSL, and a simple forward to instances. It does not have the Application Load Balancer's host and path rules. It does not have the Network Load Balancer's static IP and flow model.

What you do when you see one

You do not create a new one for example.com. If an existing application already uses one, leave it until you have an Application Load Balancer or a Network Load Balancer ready, with the same health check passing. Then move the DNS name. Creating a Classic balancer beside lab-alb teaches nothing this chapter needs.

How to recognise one and refuse the button

  1. Open Load Balancers.
  2. Read the Type column.
  3. If a row says classic or classic in the description, write down its name and stop. Do not delete a balancer you did not create.
  4. Choose Create load balancer.
  5. You should see Application, Network, and Gateway as the types for a new balancer.
  6. Do not choose Classic if the wizard still offers it under a previous-generation label.
  7. Close the wizard if you only came here to look.
