Steps in Excel
- Structure: Review › Protect › Protect Workbook › tick Structure › optional password › OK. Now the hidden
Calcsheet of your dashboard cannot be unhidden. - Encrypt: File › Info › Protect Workbook › Encrypt with Password › type and confirm a strong password › save.
- To remove encryption: open with the password › same path › delete the password › OK › save.
Password caution
If you forget an Encrypt with Password password, Microsoft cannot recover it and the file is effectively lost. Store passwords in your company's approved password manager, never in the same folder or in an e-mail with the file. Sheet and structure protection passwords are not security – anyone determined can remove them – so never rely on them for confidential data such as salaries or customer phone numbers.
Worked example. Blinkit_Dashboard.xlsx for all managers: structure protected (so nobody deletes Calc), dashboard sheet protected with slicers usable. Customer_Phones.xlsx with real contact data: Encrypt with Password plus restricted OneDrive sharing.
