18.1 How to Answer in Interviews
Use a clear structure. For "Tell me about a time…" and project questions, use the STAR method:

Explaining your Excel project (the 60-second version). Cover, in order: the business problem → the data (sources, approximate rows, only if you know them) → the cleaning steps and the problems you found → the formulas and Tables → the pivots and dashboard → any automation (Power Query, macro) → how you verified the numbers → the impact. Then stop and let the interviewer choose what to go deeper into.
Other habits that help:
- Think aloud in scenario and live-test questions. Interviewers check your approach, not only the final number.
- Define, then give an example. "An absolute reference stays fixed when copied – for example
$F$1holding the GST rate." - Say when you would use each option in comparison questions (VLOOKUP vs INDEX-MATCH vs XLOOKUP).
- Be honest about gaps. "I haven't used Solver in production, but I know it needs an objective cell, variable cells and constraints" is far better than bluffing.
- Verify in live tests. After a formula, check two rows manually and say so.
