7.8 Slicers and Timelines

Slicers are clickable filter buttons; Timelines are date sliders (Excel 2013+).

Steps in Excel

  1. Click the PivotTable › PivotTable Analyze › Filter › Insert Slicer › tick City and Platform › OK.
  2. Click a button to filter; Ctrl + click for several; the Multi-Select icon (or Alt + S) for touch-style selection; the Clear Filter icon (or Alt + C) to reset.
  3. Slicer tab › Buttons › Columns 3 to lay buttons out horizontally; choose a Slicer Style.
  4. PivotTable Analyze › Filter › Insert Timeline › tick Order Date › OK. Switch the level (Years / Quarters / Months / Days) in the top-right of the timeline and drag to select a period.
  5. Slicer Settings (right-click) › Hide items with no data.

Worked example. A small ops dashboard for Rani: slicers for City and Platform, a timeline on Order Date set to Months. She clicks Nagpur and drags the timeline over Nov 2026 – the pivot shows Nagpur's Diwali-month sales only.

Practice task

Add City, Platform and Category slicers (3 columns each) and a Month timeline to your City pivot. Save the file with all filters cleared.
