Revision cards

The Add Column tab at a glance. Raw data rarely has every column a report needs, like day name or GST.

Column From Examples. Writing formulas is hard for beginners. Typing what you want is easier.

Custom Column. Many columns need simple maths on each row, like GST or discount.

Invoke Custom Function. When the same cleaning is needed in many queries, copying steps leads to mistakes.

Conditional Column. Reports need groups like Weekday or Weekend, which are not in the data.

Duplicate Column. Some changes replace a column. Sometimes you still need the original.

From Text: format, merge, extract, parse. Text columns often need a cleaned or partial version for reports.

From Number: statistics, standard, scientific. You need row maths like totals across columns, without writing formulas.

From Date and Time: date, time, duration. Reports need parts of dates, like month name, and time gaps, like delivery minutes.

DAX calculated columns. Some columns need data from other tables in the model, which is easier in DAX.

Lesson: 8.11 DAX Calculated Columns

Calculated columns vs measures in depth. Choosing the wrong one makes the file big or the numbers wrong.

Lesson: 8.12 Calculated Columns vs Measures in Depth

Implicit vs explicit measures and measure tables. Implicit totals are quick but hard to reuse and control. Measures scattered in tables are hard to find.

Interview cards

What is the difference between a measure and a calculated column? A calculated column adds a value to every row. It is computed at refresh and saved in the model. A measure gives one number. It is computed at query time, when a visual asks for it, and is not saved.

Lesson: 8.12 Calculated Columns vs Measures in Depth

What is an implicit measure, and why prefer explicit measures? An implicit measure is created when you drag a number field into a visual and Power BI sums it. An explicit measure is written in DAX. Explicit measures can be reused, named, formatted once and used inside other measures.

Should a new column be made in Power Query or with DAX? Prefer Power Query (custom column) when the column uses only the same table's row data. Use a DAX calculated column when it needs related tables or model logic, like RELATED.

Comparison cards

Power Query custom column vs DAX calculated column. Both add a new column to a table. A custom column is made in Power Query (the cleaning step) with the M language. A calculated column is made after loading, with DAX.

Lesson: 8.3 Custom Column

Implicit vs explicit measure. Both are measures, formulas that give one number for the current filters. An implicit one is made by dragging a field. An explicit one is written in DAX.

Conditional Column vs DAX IF column. Both add an if-then label to each row. A Conditional Column is made in Power Query with a form. A DAX IF column is written as a calculated column.
