2.4 The Panes in Report View
On the right side of Report view you will see several panes. You can collapse or expand each one.
Visualizations pane
This is where you pick a visual type and configure it. It has three sub-sections:
- Build visual – the gallery of visual icons and the field wells (for example X-axis, Y-axis, Legend, Values, Tooltips, Drill through).
- Format visual (paintbrush icon) – all formatting options, split into Visual settings (axes, data labels, colours) and General settings (title, effects, header icons, tooltips, alt text).
- Analytics (magnifying-glass icon) – add reference lines such as average, min, max, constant lines, trend line and forecast (available for some visuals).
Data pane
Shows all tables, columns, measures and hierarchies in your model. Icons help you identify each field:
- Σ (sigma) – a numeric column that summarises automatically
- Calculator icon – a measure
- Table icon with fx – a calculated column
- Calendar/hierarchy icon – a date hierarchy (श्रेणीरचना) or custom hierarchy
Drag a field onto the canvas or into a field well to use it. Tick the checkbox to let Power BI choose a suitable visual automatically.
Filters pane
Shows filters for the selected visual, the current page and all pages. Covered in detail in Module 22.
Other panes (open from the View tab)
- Bookmarks – save and recall report states
- Selection – show/hide and reorder objects, set tab order
- Sync slicers – make a slicer affect several pages
- Performance analyzer – measure the time taken by each visual (on the Optimize tab)
Ravindra Bagale's Tip
Mitrano, khup students close the Filters, Visualizations or Data pane by accident and think the feature is gone. Use the View tab to switch panes back on. Get used to collapsing panes you aren't using so the canvas has more space. Ekdum simple aahe, fakt savay lavun ghya.
