Power BI Fields, Filters and Visualizations Panes Explained
In Power BI Desktop Report view, the Fields pane lists tables and measures, the Visualizations pane picks chart types and field wells, and the Filters pane applies visual, page or report filters — three panes, one canvas story.
Chala mitrano! New Desktop windows look busy until you name the three sidekicks: Fields, Visualizations, Filters. Why? Because every “my chart is empty” ticket starts in the wrong pane. How? We walk each pane with vertical steps and a FreshBasket (fictional) card that shows Mumbai 140. Ekdum clear karuya.
Quick answer
Vertical map:
- Fields — pick columns and measures.
- Visualizations — pick the chart and fill wells (Axis, Values, …).
- Filters — add extra filters at visual / page / report level.
- Select a visual before editing its wells or visual filters.
- Use slicers on-canvas when readers should drive filters.
- Hide panes you are not using to reduce noise.
Fields → ingredients
Visualizations → recipe + chart type
Filters pane → extra scope (visual/page/report)
Why three panes, what happens when you click
Think of cooking:
- Fields = ingredients list (City, Amount,
[Total Sales]). - Visualizations = which dish and which bowl (Card, column chart, wells).
- Filters pane = extra rules the cook locks (Year = 2025 on the whole page).
Tiny data:
| City | Amount |
|---|---|
| Mumbai | 100 |
| Mumbai | 40 |
| Nashik | 80 |
- You click a Card in Visualizations.
- You tick
[Total Sales]in Fields. - Card shows 220 (all rows).
- You put City = Mumbai in Filters on this visual (or a slicer).
- Card shows 140.
Wrong well → blank visual. Wrong filter level → “only one chart broke”.
Report view panes: Fields (tables/columns/measures), Visualizations (chart types + wells), Filters (visual/page/report).

What do I need before this guide?
- A
.pbixwith at least one table (first report). - Course: The panes in Report view.
Before and after (look at the tables first)
Before
आधी (Before)
पहले (Before)
After
नंतर (After)
बाद में (After)
Fields supply columns; Visualizations builds the chart; Filters pane can keep Year = 2025 → 140. Select the visual first.
Fields pane
- Shows tables, columns, hierarchies and measures (fx).
- Tick a field or drag it onto the canvas / into a well.
- Right-click for rename, hide, new measure shortcuts (version UI varies).
If Fields is missing: View tab → enable Fields.
Visualizations pane
- Click a visual icon (Card, Column chart, Table, …).
- Field wells appear — names change by visual (Axis, Legend, Values, Tooltips).
- Format paint roller styles colours, titles, labels.
- Analytics (where available) adds constants, trends, etc.
Tick or drag a field onto a visual well (Axis, Legend, Values). The canvas updates when the well accepts the field.
मित्रांनो — Tick or drag a field onto a visual well (Axis, Legend, Values). The canvas updates when the well accepts the field.
मित्रों — Tick or drag a field onto a visual well (Axis, Legend, Values). The canvas updates when the well accepts the field.
Classroom demo (vertical):
- Select Card.
- Tick
[Total Sales](or a numeric column). - Change to Clustered column chart.
- Put City on Axis and Amount / measure on Values.
- Mumbai bar should read 140, Nashik 80.
Filters pane
Filters pane levels: this visual → this page → all pages (report). Narrower filters sit closer to one chart.
मित्रांनो — Filters pane levels: this visual → this page → all pages (report). Narrower filters sit closer to one chart.
मित्रों — Filters pane levels: this visual → this page → all pages (report). Narrower filters sit closer to one chart.
- Filters on this visual — only the selected chart.
- Filters on this page — every visual on the page.
- Filters on all pages — report-wide.
- Basic / Advanced / Top N / Relative date options depending on data type.
Slicers vs Filters pane: slicers are friendly and visible; Filters pane can hold locked/hidden author rules.
Shop analogy: a slicer is the customer choosing City at the counter. A page filter is the shop rule “show 2025 only” for every screen.
How the three panes cooperate
- Fields supply the ingredient.
- Visualizations decide the chart shape.
- Filters pane (and slicers) narrow which rows feed the measure.
Mistakes and calm fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Blank visual | No fields in wells | Select visual; tick fields |
| Filter does nothing | Wrong level / unrelated table | Check relationships; move filter |
| Pane missing | Hidden in View | Re-enable Fields / Filters / Visualizations |
| Accidental page filter | Field dropped on page bucket | Clear page filter |
| Readers stuck | Hidden Filters pane rules | Document or use slicers |
Ghabru naka 😅 — empty chart is usually a well problem, not a broken install.
Ravindra Bagale's Tip
A common mistake: students keep editing wells while no visual is selected, then wonder why nothing changes. Click the chart first — then Fields and Visualizations talk to that chart. Keep this in mind!
Ravindra Bagale's Tip –
Ravindra Bagale's Tip –
Practice task
- Build one page: Card + column chart + table.
- Add a page-level filter on Year.
- Add a visual-level filter on the table only.
- Screenshot the Filters pane with both levels visible for your notes.
- Prove Mumbai 140 on the card with a City slicer.
Got it? Fields = data. Visualizations = charts. Filters = scope. Click the visual first. Next we turn off Auto date/time. Let's continue.
समजलं का? Fields = data. Visualizations = charts. Filters = scope. Click the visual first. Next we turn off Auto date/time. आता पुढे जाऊया.
समझ में आया? Fields = data. Visualizations = charts. Filters = scope. Click the visual first. Next we turn off Auto date/time. आगे बढ़ते हैं.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Fields pane?
The list of tables, columns and measures in your model — the ingredients you put on visuals.
What is the Visualizations pane?
Where you pick chart types, configure field wells and open the Format / Analytics paint rollers.
What is the Filters pane?
Where you apply filters at visual, page or report level without placing a slicer on the canvas.
Slicer vs Filters pane?
Slicers are visible for readers; Filters pane can hold hidden/locked author filters. Both affect filter context.
My field will not drop on Values?
Wrong data type, measure vs column mismatch, or the visual well expects a category. Check the well tooltip.
