Dashboard vs Report in the Power BI Service
A report is the multi-page, interactive file you build in Desktop and publish: slicers, drill, many pages. A dashboard in the Power BI Service is one page of tiles pinned from reports. People say “dashboard” for any screen. In the Service the words mean different objects.
Friends! A manager says “send the dashboard” and points at a report with three pages. Why the fuss? Because a dashboard cannot hold the whole interactive story, and a report is not a one-page pinboard. How? We keep the FreshBasket report, where City can move from Mumbai 150 to Pune 40, and we pin one card onto a Service dashboard for the morning glance.
Quick answer
Vertical path:
- Build pages in a report. That is where slicers and drill live.
- Publish the report.
- In the Service, pin a visual to a dashboard.
- The dashboard is one canvas of tiles from one or more reports.
- Clicking a tile can open the report underneath. The report is still the place to explore.
- Do not pin a test visual that was filtered by accident. The tile remembers that filter.
Report = explore (many pages)
Dashboard = glance (one page of tiles)
Same numbers, two places
| Question | Where | What you see |
|---|---|---|
| Change City yourself | Report slicer | Mumbai 150 or Pune 40 |
| Morning glance, no clicks | Dashboard tile pinned on Mumbai | 150 stays until you pin a different state |
| All cities, no slicer | Report card | 190 |
- The tile does not invent a new model. It shows a visual from the report.
- If you pin while City = Mumbai, the tile is about Mumbai. Read the title before you pin.
- A report page can hold the slicer, the trend, and the table. A dashboard should not try to copy every page.
- The guide Build your first Power BI page uses “dashboard” the way beginners speak: a first report page. This page is the Service difference. Both words appear in job ads. Know which object you mean.
What do I need before this guide?
- A published report (publish).
- Course: Report vs dashboard · Dashboards in the Service.
Before and after (look at the tables first)
Before - Report slicer. Explore here
आधी (Before) — Report स्लायसर.
पहले (Before) — Report स्लाइसर.
After - Pinned tile. Glance, then explore
नंतर (After) — Pin केलेली tile.
How to pin a tile
A report has pages and slicers. City can move from Mumbai 150 to Pune 40.
- Open the published report in the Service.
- Set the slicers to the story you want frozen on the tile. For a Mumbai morning card, City = Mumbai, card = 150.
- Hover the visual. Choose the pin icon.
- Pin to an existing dashboard or a new one named FreshBasket Morning.
- Open the dashboard. Confirm the tile says Mumbai, not “Total” with a hidden filter.
- Click the tile. You should land back on the report, where you can change City to Pune and see 40.
- Leave the report as the place for questions. Leave the dashboard as the place for a glance.
A dashboard is one page of tiles pinned in the Service. Pin the glance. Explore in the report.
Alerts: some dashboard tiles (card, KPI, gauge) can raise an alert when a number crosses a line after refresh. That is a dashboard feature. Do not rebuild the report as a dashboard just to get an alert. Pin the one card.
What not to confuse
- A report can have one page and still be a report. One page does not make it a dashboard.
- A dashboard cannot be edited in Desktop. You pin in the Service.
- Mobile layout exists for both. A crowded report is not automatically a good phone screen.
- Q&A tiles and mixed reports on one dashboard are optional. Learn pin first.
- Deleting the report can break the tiles. The dashboard is not a backup of the data.
Mistakes and calm fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Tile shows 40, you expected 190 | You pinned with Pune selected | Repin with the right slicer state |
| “Dashboard” has slicers and three pages | It is a report | Call it a report; pin only the glance |
| Tile is blank after a model change | The visual was removed or renamed | Pin it again |
| Everyone explores on the dashboard | They needed the report | Give them the report link or the app |
Ravindra Bagale's Tip
Interview line: “A report is interactive and multi-page. A dashboard is a single page of tiles pinned from reports. I pin the glance, and I leave exploration in the report.” Got it?

Practice task
- Open a published report and slice Mumbai, 150.
- Pin the card to a new dashboard.
- Clear the slicer on the report and see 190. Check whether the tile changed.
- Click the tile and land on the report.
- Write one sentence: which object should a manager explore in?
Got it? Report to explore, dashboard to glance. Pin on purpose. Next: share a report with a link, without sending the file. Let us go ahead.
