Field Parameters in Power BI

Field parameters let the reader pick which field a visual uses — switch Sales / Orders / AOV on the same chart, or switch the axis between City and Channel — without building three copies of the page.

Friends! Authors duplicate pages for every KPI. Why? They never met field parameters. How? We create a Measure Pick parameter for fictional FreshBasket sales, drop it on a slicer, put the parameter on the chart Values well, then optionally add an axis parameter. One chart, many questions.

Quick answer

Vertical path:

  1. Modeling → New parameter → Fields.
  2. Tick [Total Sales], [Orders], [AOV] → name it Measure Pick.
  3. Put Measure Pick on a slicer (single select).
  4. Chart Values gets the parameter field — remove the old hard-coded measures.
  5. Optional: second parameter for City / Channel / Month on the axis.
  6. Click each slicer value and read the number.
Slicer picks a field → visual uses that field → same chart, new question

Real example: one bar, three shop questions

City Sales Orders AOV
Mumbai 1000 2 500
Pune 160 2 80

Without a parameter you build three charts. With a field parameter:

  1. Slicer = Sales → Mumbai bar 1000, Pune 160.
  2. Slicer = Orders → both cities 2.
  3. Slicer = AOV → Mumbai 500, Pune 80.
  4. Rows of the model did not change. The visual swapped which measure it asked for.

Why the helper exists: the Values well can only show what you put there. The parameter is a special field that points at the chosen measure.

What do I need before this guide?

Before and after (look at the tables first)

Before field parameters All measures shown without a picker.

Before

After field parameters Single chart showing AOV via parameter.

After

Create a measure parameter

Field Param Measure A field parameter lets the reader pick which measure the same chart shows — Sales, Orders, or AOV. Field Param Measure A field parameter lets the reader pick which measure the same chart shows — Sales, Orders, or AOV.

Field Param Slicer Drop the parameter on a slicer. The chart fields well holds the parameter column, not every measure by hand. Field Param Slicer Drop the parameter on a slicer. The chart fields well holds the parameter column, not every measure by hand.

Drop the parameter on a slicer. The chart fields well holds the parameter column, not every measure by hand.

  1. Modeling → New parameter → Fields.
  2. Select the measures. Keep “Add slicer to this page” ticked while learning.
  3. On the chart, remove [Total Sales] from Values.
  4. Drag Measure Pick (the parameter column) into Values.
  5. Format each base measure (currency, whole number). The parameter reuses those formats.

Axis parameter (dimensions)

Field Param Axis A second parameter can switch the axis: City, Channel, or Month — one chart, three questions. Field Param Axis A second parameter can switch the axis: City, Channel, or Month — one chart, three questions.

A second parameter can switch the axis: City, Channel, or Month — one chart, three questions.

  1. New Fields parameter with City, Channel, Month.
  2. Put it on the axis well instead of a fixed City.
  3. Now the same measure can answer “by city” or “by channel”.
  4. Title the page so readers know the slicer changes the question.

Field parameter vs what-if vs old SWITCH table

  1. Field parameter — switches fields on visuals.
  2. What-if parameter — numeric input (discount %, target) for scenarios.
  3. Disconnected table + SWITCH — older pattern; still useful, but field parameters cover most measure pickers.

Mistakes and calm fixes

Symptom Likely cause Fix
Blank chart Old measures still on Values; parameter missing Values = parameter field
Wrong format Base measure not formatted Format Sales / Orders / AOV
Confusing multi-select Too many fields at once Single-select slicer
Thought it was what-if Mixed names Numeric what-if is a different tool

Ravindra Bagale's Tip

Interview line: “Field parameters swap fields on a visual; what-if parameters feed numbers into measures.” Then show one slicer changing Sales to AOV. Got it?

Practice task

  1. Build Measure Pick for Sales, Orders, AOV.
  2. Wire one bar chart.
  3. Add an axis parameter for City and Channel.
  4. Screenshot each slicer state with the number you expect.

Got it? Field parameter = reader picks the field; one chart answers many questions. Next: report layout. Let us go ahead.

Frequently asked questions

Field parameter vs what-if?

Field parameters switch fields on a visual. What-if parameters are numeric inputs for scenarios.

Why is the chart blank?

You left the old measures on Values and never placed the parameter column.

Can I format each measure?

Format the underlying measures. The parameter points at them; it does not replace their formats.

Disconnected table still needed?

Not for this pattern. Field parameters replaced most SWITCH disconnected-table setups for measure pickers.

Multi-select?

Possible, but single-select is clearer when the card should show one KPI.
