Report Page Tooltips in Power BI
A report page tooltip is a small report page that appears when the reader hovers a point, already filtered to that point — a designed hint, not a second copy of the whole report.
Friends! Default tooltips are a list of numbers. A report page tooltip is a tiny page you design. Why does it show every city? The field on the chart and the field in the tooltip well are not the same. How? We build a FreshBasket (fictional) City snapshot, allow it as a tooltip, keep the canvas small, and hide the page. Hover, then check the filter.
Quick answer
Vertical setup:
- New page, named so you recognise it (TT City Snapshot).
- Allow use as tooltip = On.
- Canvas type = Tooltip.
- Two or three small visuals only.
- Put the same City field in the tooltip well.
- On the main chart, Tooltips → Report page → that page. Then hide the tooltip page.
Real example: hover Mumbai, see that shop only
The main visual is a bar: Mumbai 1000, Pune 160. The bar stays simple. The extra facts live on a small tooltip page.
On that little page, for the city under the pointer:
- Orders (Mumbai has 2 if rice and oil share an order).
- The March phone bill (Mumbai 699, Pune 399).
- A tiny line of the bill for Jan, Feb, Mar.
What happens when you hover Mumbai:
- The bar's City value is Mumbai.
- The tooltip page must use that same City field, so only Mumbai rows go in.
- Sales context is already Mumbai. The bill card must say 699, not 699+399.
What happens if you hover and still see both cities: the field on the bar and the field in the tooltip well are not the same column. The mini page then sums every shop. Fix the field. Do not add more charts.
The phone bill belongs in the hover because it answers the next question ("is this shop also spending more?") without crowding the bar. It does not belong as a second bar unless the question is the bill itself.
What do I need before this guide?

What the reader should feel
A report-page tooltip is a small hidden page that appears on hover, filtered to the item under the pointer.
- The bar chart stays clean: City and Sales.
- Hover Nashik. A small page shows two extra facts: orders, and a tiny month trend for Nashik only.
- Move to Pune. The mini page must change. If it does not, it is not filtered.
- The main chart does not need those extra measures in the Values well. That is the point of the tooltip.
Build the page
Turn Allow use as tooltip on, set the canvas type to Tooltip, and drop the matching field in the tooltip well.
Allow use as tooltip चालू करा, कॅनव्हास प्रकार Tooltip करा, आणि जुळणारा field tooltip well मध्ये टाका.
Allow use as tooltip चालू करो, कैनवस का प्रकार Tooltip रखो, और मिलता field tooltip well में डालो.
- Click + for a new page. Rename it
TT City Snapshot. - Click empty canvas so no visual is selected.
- Format page → Page information → Allow use as tooltip = On.
- Canvas settings → Type = Tooltip. Stay near the small default. A full-size page will cover the report.
- Add a card for
[Orders]and a small column or line for sales by month. Short titles. - With still no visual selected, drag
Customer[City]into Add tooltip fields here. Use the same City column the bar chart uses, not a lookalike from another table. - Select the bar chart on the main page → Format → General → Tooltips → Type = Report page → Page = TT City Snapshot.
- Right-click the tooltip page tab → Hide page after the hover works.
If the tooltip page is not filtered, the field on the chart is not the field in the tooltip well.
Default tooltip versus this
- Default shows what is already on the visual, plus fields you drop in that visual’s Tooltips well. Fast, a bit plain.
- Report page is for a layout: two cards and a spark of a chart.
- Do not put eight measures in either. The next question, not the whole model.
- If the report-page name never appears in the dropdown, Allow use as tooltip is still off.
Check the hover
- Hover a city you know.
- Read the filters: the mini page should say that city, not the grand total.
- Turn a slicer (year) and hover again. Decide whether the tooltip should respect it. Usually yes, because the main visual does.
- Keep text large. The canvas is small; a paragraph will not fit.
Ghabru naka — a tooltip that shows the company total is a field mismatch, not a mystery cache.
Mistakes and calm fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Page not in the list | Tooltip not allowed | Page information → On |
| All cities combined | Wrong or missing tooltip field | Same City column as the chart |
| Tooltip covers everything | Canvas too big | Type = Tooltip |
| Readers open it as a tab | Page not hidden | Hide after testing |
Ravindra Bagale's Tip
Interview line: “A report page tooltip is a small page with Allow use as tooltip, canvas type Tooltip, and the same field in the tooltip well as on the chart. If hover shows the grand total, the fields do not match.” Got it?

मुलाखतीचे वाक्य: “report page tooltip लहान पेज आहे, Allow use as tooltip सह, कॅनव्हास प्रकार Tooltip, आणि tooltip well मधील field chart सारखाच.
Ravindra Bagale's Tip –
Practice task
- Build the City bar chart.
- Build TT City Snapshot with one card and one small chart.
- Hover two cities and write both numbers down.
- Remove the tooltip field on purpose, hover, then put it back.
- Hide the page.
Got it? The tooltip page is small, allowed as a tooltip, and filtered by the same field the chart uses. Next: a full page for one item, which is drill through, not a hover. Let's continue.
Frequently asked questions
Tooltip page missing in the list?
Allow use as tooltip is off, or you are looking at page type settings on the wrong page.
Hover shows all cities?
The chart’s City field is not the field in the tooltip well, so the mini page is not filtered.
Default tooltip vs report page?
Default shows the fields on the visual (plus tooltip well fields). A report page is a designed mini page.
Should I hide the page?
Yes, after it works. Readers should meet it on hover, not as a mystery tab.
How many visuals?
Two or three. A heavy page is slow and covers the chart.
