Perplexity for Students: Cited Research Without Copying
Perplexity is an AI search tool that answers with links to sources. Use it to find facts for homework, then write in your own words. As of 23 October 2026, the free plan includes about 3 Pro Searches per day and 1 Research query per month. Perplexity Pro is about $20 per month on the web (or about ₹1,999 per month on the India App Store, taxes included there). Verified students can get Education Pro for about $10 per month after SheerID check. Plans change — confirm on perplexity.ai before you pay.
Suppose you have a college assignment on "UPI safety for first-time users". You need five real sources, not a copied essay. Open Perplexity, ask for a short briefing with citations, open every link, then write your own paragraphs. This guide shows that path for Indian students.

What you will learn in this guide
- What Perplexity is (vs ChatGPT chat)
- Free vs Pro vs student Education Pro
- Assignment brief with 5 sources
- Laptop compare with citations
- AWS AIF topic brief with links
- Honest-use rules (no copy-paste)
1. Suppose Priya needs five sources by tonight
Suppose Priya studies in Pune. Her teacher wants a two-page note on UPI fraud signs, with links. ChatGPT can write a neat essay, but may invent soft sources. Priya opens Perplexity, asks for a cited brief, clicks each link, and rewrites in her own words. That is the student workflow this page teaches.
2. What is Perplexity?
| Word | Simple meaning |
|---|---|
| Perplexity | AI search that returns an answer plus source links |
| Pro Search | Deeper search mode (limited on Free) |
| Research | Longer multi-step report mode (very limited on Free) |
| Citation | A link or reference you can open and check |
| Education Pro | Discounted Pro for verified students / educators |
Figure 1. Perplexity for students in five steps: ask with sources, open every link, take notes in your words, write the assignment yourself, then cite the real pages.
3. Free, Pro and student prices (checked 23 October 2026)
Open Perplexity and the plan page in your account before you pay. Numbers below can change.
| Plan | About price | What students usually get |
|---|---|---|
| Free (Standard) | ₹0 | About 3 Pro Searches / day, 1 Research / month; limited file uploads; no advanced models or image generation on free |
| Pro (web) | About $20 / month or $200 / year | Higher Pro Search limits, advanced models, more uploads |
| Pro (India App Store listing) | About ₹1,999 / month (incl. App Store taxes) | Same product family; checkout amount can differ by store |
| Education Pro | About $10 / month after student / educator verification | Pro features at a student price (SheerID flow on perplexity.ai/students) |
| Max | Much higher (India App Store listing about ₹19,900 / month) | Power users — most students do not need this first |
Honest rule: Free is enough to learn the citation habit. Pay only if you hit Free limits every week.
4. Worked example 1: college assignment with 5 sources
- Open perplexity.ai and sign in.
- Paste this prompt (change the topic to yours):
I am a college student in India. Topic: UPI fraud signs for first-time users.
Give a short briefing in simple English.
Include at least 5 source links I can open (RBI, NPCI, news, or cyber tips).
Do not invent links. Prefer official pages when possible.
End with 5 bullet points I must rewrite in my own words.
- Click every link. If a link fails, ask Perplexity to replace that source.
- In a notebook, write 5 bullets in your words. Do not paste the AI paragraph into the assignment.
- In your paper, add a Sources list with the real URLs you opened.
Expected output (yours will be similar, not the same): a short answer with numbered citations, plus five openable links. Your marks come from your rewrite and correct citations.
Ravindra Bagale's Tip
Students often paste the whole Perplexity answer and lose marks for copying. Use Perplexity as a library index, not as the final essay.
5. Worked example 2: compare 3 laptops with citations
- Start a new thread. Paste:
Compare these three laptop models for a college student in India
who needs coding + Zoom classes (8 GB RAM minimum):
1) [MODEL A]
2) [MODEL B]
3) [MODEL C]
Make a table: RAM, storage, weight, official price page link.
Use only prices and specs you can cite with links.
If a fact is unclear, say "check live page".
Do not invent INR prices.
- Replace MODEL A/B/C with real product names from Flipkart or the brand site.
- Open each official or retailer link yourself.
- Export or copy only the table structure, then fill final numbers from the pages you opened.
- Never paste card details or OTP into Perplexity.
Expected output: a comparison table with source links. You still buy (or not) yourself.
6. Worked example 3: AWS AI Practitioner topic brief
- Cross-link your study plan with the live cost guide: AWS AI Practitioner exam cost in India.
- Ask Perplexity:
Explain Amazon Bedrock vs Amazon Q in simple English for AIF-C01 prep.
Give 4 bullet differences and 3 official AWS documentation links.
No invented exam scores. Mark anything that may be outdated.
- Open the AWS docs links.
- Write a half-page note in your words with those three links at the bottom.
- Save the note in your exam folder (not as a secret "AI essay bank" for friends to copy).
Expected output: a short, cited brief you can revise before the exam.
7. Honest use for Indian colleges
- Ask what your college allows. Some ban AI text; some allow research help.
- Never submit AI text as your own writing.
- Never paste Aadhaar, marksheets with full details, or passwords into any AI box.
- Prefer official .gov.in / RBI / NPCI / AWS docs for policy and exam facts.
- If Perplexity and a second tool disagree, trust the primary document, not the chat.
8. Beginner mistakes and quick fixes
| Mistake | What happens | Quick fix |
|---|---|---|
| Pasting the full answer | Plagiarism risk | Rewrite every sentence |
| Skipping the links | Fake or dead sources | Open each URL |
| Invented INR prices in prompts | Wrong shopping decisions | "Check live page" |
| Paying Max on day one | Money wasted | Stay on Free or Education Pro |
| Sharing login with classmates | Account risk | One person, one account |
9. Try at home
Try at home
- Run example 1 on your real assignment topic.
- Open all five links and write five bullets in your own words.
- Ask a classmate to spot any sentence that still sounds copied — rewrite those lines.
