ChatGPT Go vs Plus vs Free in India (2026): Price, Limits and Which Plan to Pick

On chatgpt.com in India, ChatGPT Free costs ₹0, Go costs ₹399 a month and Plus costs ₹1,999 a month (checked on 19 October 2026). Go gives higher limits than Free for messages, image creation, file uploads and data analysis, plus longer memory and projects; Plus adds the most capable GPT-6 models and ChatGPT Work. Go and Plus are billed monthly only, and you can pay for Go and Plus with UPI. Start on Free, move to Go if you hit limits often, and choose Plus only if Go still blocks real work.

When the free year of ChatGPT Go ended for new users, my WhatsApp filled with one question: "Sir, Go or Plus?" Most of my students pay for more than they use. In this guide we look at what each plan gives you, check your own usage for a week, work out the yearly cost with a short script, and learn how to pay with UPI and how to cancel.

This guide is about ChatGPT plans. To learn how to use ChatGPT well on any plan, read How to Use ChatGPT Step by Step: Chats, Follow-ups, Memory and Projects. To compare with Claude's plans, read the guide Claude AI Free vs Pro in India.

What you will learn in this guide

  • Free, Go and Plus side by side
  • Checking which plan you are on
  • A one-week limit test before paying
  • Paying with UPI and cancelling
  • Yearly cost with a script
  • What happened to the free Go offer

1. Suppose Anjali keeps hitting the limit

Suppose Anjali, an HR assistant in Indore, uses ChatGPT Free for emails and Excel help. Twice a week, in the middle of work, it says she has reached a limit and the image she wanted to make will have to wait. A friend says "just buy Plus, it's the best". Plus is ₹1,999 a month, which is about ₹24,000 a year. Anjali is not sure she needs that much.

2. The three plans side by side (chatgpt.com, India, 19 October 2026)

Free Go Plus
Price ₹0 ₹399 a month ₹1,999 a month
Messages, images, file uploads, data analysis Limited Higher limits than Free Higher than Go
Longer memory, projects, tasks, custom GPTs Limited Yes Yes
Most capable models (GPT-6) and ChatGPT Work No No Yes
Pay with UPI Not needed Yes Yes

OpenAI says ads may be tested on Go. There is also Pro, from ₹10,699 a month, for very heavy users; UPI is not available for Pro. None of the paid plans has a yearly option; each renews every month. Prices on the App Store or Google Play can differ, so check the amount at checkout.

What happened to "ChatGPT Go free for one year"? OpenAI's offer of 12 free months of Go in India stopped taking new sign-ups on 21 January 2026. If you claimed it, open Settings, then Account, to see your renewal date.

Picking a ChatGPT plan in five steps Steps from top to bottom: 1 Start on Free, Rs 0, no card needed; 2 Log limits for a week, How often it stops real work; 3 Try Go for one month, Rs 399, pay with UPI; 4 Plus only if needed, Top models or ChatGPT Work; 5 Reminder before renewal, Paid plans renew monthly. 1Start on FreeRs 0, no card needed 2Log limits for a weekHow often it stops real work 3Try Go for one monthRs 399, pay with UPI 4Plus only if neededTop models or ChatGPT Work 5Reminder before renewalPaid plans renew monthly

Figure 1. Picking a ChatGPT plan in five steps: start on Free, note each limit for a week, try Go if limits stop you often, choose Plus only for the top models or ChatGPT Work, and set a reminder before renewal.

3. Worked example 1: check your plan and limits

  1. Open chatgpt.com and sign in.
  2. Click your profile icon. Your plan name shows there. Click Upgrade plan to see all plans with Indian prices.
  3. When you hit a limit, ChatGPT shows a message with the time it resets. Write that time down.

Expected output: a plan page showing Free, Go and Plus in rupees, with your current plan marked.

4. Worked example 2: a one-week limit test

Before paying, keep a small log for one week:

Date | What I was doing | Limit hit? | Could I wait?
19 Oct    | Excel formula help        | No         | -
20 Oct | Poster image for office | Yes, 2 pm | Yes, made it at 5 pm
22 Oct | Long PDF summary | Yes | No, needed it for a meeting

Expected output: a clear count. If limits stopped real work two or more times, try Go for one month. If they never did, stay on Free. Only if Go still blocks you, or you need the top models or ChatGPT Work, try Plus.

Ravindra Bagale's Tip

Buy one month, not a habit. Because every paid plan renews monthly, set a phone reminder two days before the renewal date and ask: "Did I really need it this month?" If not, cancel and go back to Free.

5. Worked example 3: pay with UPI, then learn to cancel

  1. On chatgpt.com, click Upgrade plan and choose Go (or Plus).
  2. At checkout, choose UPI, enter your UPI ID and approve the payment in your UPI app.
  3. To cancel later: Settings, then Account, then manage your subscription and cancel. You keep the plan until the end of the month you paid for.
  4. If you subscribed in the iPhone or Android app, cancel in the App Store or Google Play subscriptions instead.

Expected output: a payment receipt by email, and the plan name changes from Free to Go on your profile.

6. Worked example 4: yearly cost with a script (Python)

Monthly prices look small. This script shows the cost for 12 months and per day, with Indian comma style.

# ChatGPT Free vs Go vs Plus in India: yearly cost and cost per day, monthly billing only.
PLANS = {"Free": 0, "Go": 399, "Plus": 1999}
def inr(n):
    s = str(n)
    if len(s) <= 3: return "Rs " + s
    head, tail = s[:-3], s[-3:]
    parts = []
    while len(head) > 2:
        parts.insert(0, head[-2:]); head = head[:-2]
    if head: parts.insert(0, head)
    return "Rs " + ",".join(parts + [tail])
print(f"{'Plan':<6}{'Month':>10}{'12 months':>13}{'Per day':>10}")
for p, m in PLANS.items():
    print(f"{p:<6}{inr(m):>10}{inr(m*12):>13}{('Rs %.2f' % (m*12/365)):>10}")
print("\nGo for 12 months costs", inr(399*12), "and Plus costs", inr(1999*12) + ".")
print("Plus minus Go for a year:", inr((1999-399)*12))

Real output (19 October 2026):

Plan Month 12 months Per day
Free        Rs 0         Rs 0   Rs 0.00
Go        Rs 399     Rs 4,788  Rs 13.12
Plus    Rs 1,999    Rs 23,988  Rs 65.72

Go for 12 months costs Rs 4,788 and Plus costs Rs 23,988.
Plus minus Go for a year: Rs 19,200

Plus costs ₹19,200 more than Go over a year. Ask yourself whether the top models are worth that for your work.

7. Which plan fits whom

  • School and college students: Free, and use Study mode. See AI Tools for Students.
  • Office work, emails, Excel and some images: Go.
  • Daily heavy work, long documents, coding, ChatGPT Work: Plus.
  • Teams in a company: ask your company about a Business plan instead of paying yourself.

8. Beginner mistakes and quick fixes

Mistake What happens Quick fix
Buying Plus first Paying for unused power Log a week, try Go first
Forgetting renewal Charged every month Reminder two days before
Buying from a "cheap ChatGPT" seller Shared or stolen account Pay only on chatgpt.com or the official app
Cancelling on the website for an app subscription It keeps renewing Cancel in the App Store or Google Play
Expecting UPI on Pro Payment fails Use a card for Pro
Looking for a yearly plan It does not exist Monthly billing only

  2. Note each limit for a week.
  3. Count the times it blocked work.
  4. Run the cost script.
  5. Decide: Free, Go or Plus.
