AI Salary in India for Freshers (2026): Prompt Engineer, AI Engineer and 3 More Roles
On 19 October 2026, Glassdoor India showed these "most likely" base-pay ranges (the middle half of reported salaries): Junior Data Analyst ₹3L to ₹6L a year, Junior Data Scientist ₹4L to ₹8L, Prompt Engineer ₹4L to ₹9L, Associate AI Engineer ₹4L to ₹11L and AI Engineer ₹7L to ₹18L. Divided by 12, ₹6L a year is ₹50,000 a month before PF and tax, so your in-hand amount is lower. These are self-reported figures for India as a whole; your city, company type and the skills you can prove move the number more than the job title does.
"Sir, how much will I get in AI as a fresher?" is a question I hear often. The honest answer is a range, not a number, and it depends on which job hides behind the title. In this guide you will see the real ranges with their source and date, turn yearly pay into monthly pay with a small script, read a dummy offer letter the right way, and check the number for your own city and company before you negotiate.
Full course chapter
This guide is about pay. The course chapter is about getting the job: 5 roles, 3 roadmaps, 3 portfolio projects and a skills-gap check. Read it here: AI Jobs in India for Freshers: Roles, Skills and 3 Portfolio Projects.
What you will learn in this guide
- Salary ranges for 5 AI roles
- Why the same title pays so differently
- Yearly to monthly pay, with a script
- CTC vs in-hand, on a dummy offer
- How to check your own city and company
- What raises a fresher's offer
1. Suppose two friends get "AI" offers
Suppose Rohan and Sana both finish college in Pune. Rohan gets a "Prompt Engineer" offer from a content agency. Sana gets an "Associate AI Engineer" offer from a product company. Both offers say "AI". Their pay is very different, and both are normal.
Why? Rohan's job is writing and testing prompts for marketing copy. Sana's job is writing Python that calls model APIs and building RAG features. The market pays for the work, not the word "AI" in the title. So first look at the ranges, then at what each role does.
2. The ranges (Glassdoor India, 19 October 2026)
| Role on Glassdoor | Most likely base pay (per year) | Average base pay | Salaries reported |
|---|---|---|---|
| Junior Data Analyst | ₹3L to ₹6L | ₹5L | 681 |
| Junior Data Scientist | ₹4L to ₹8L | ₹6L | 593 |
| Prompt Engineer | ₹4L to ₹9L | ₹6L | 42 |
| Associate AI Engineer | ₹4L to ₹11L | ₹6L | 47 |
| AI Engineer | ₹7L to ₹18L | ₹10L | 1,439 |
How to read this table:
- "Most likely range" is Glassdoor's 25th to 75th percentile: half of the reported salaries fall inside it.
- "L" means lakh: ₹6L is ₹6,00,000 a year.
- "Junior" and "Associate" titles are the usual entry titles. "Prompt Engineer" and "AI Engineer" pages mix all experience levels, so a fresher usually starts in the lower part of those ranges.
- Small samples move fast. Prompt Engineer (42 salaries) and Associate AI Engineer (47) can change a lot in a month. Data Analyst and AI Engineer have hundreds or more.
- Base pay only. Glassdoor shows bonuses and other pay separately.
Figure 1. Reading any salary number: check the source and date, the title, the experience level, base or total pay, then turn it into a monthly in-hand estimate.
3. Why the same title pays so differently
| What changes | Lower end of the range | Upper end of the range |
|---|---|---|
| The real work | Prompt writing, labelling, content checks | Code, APIs, RAG, testing and deployment |
| Company type | Small agency or services project | Product company or global capability centre (GCC) |
| City | Often lower in smaller cities | Often higher in big tech hubs such as Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Pune |
| Proof | Certificates only | Projects with demos, code and test results |
You cannot change the city overnight, but you can change the work you can show. That is why the course chapter puts projects first.
4. Worked example 1: yearly to monthly pay (Python)
Offers in India are written per year (LPA, lakh per annum), but rent and EMIs are monthly. This script turns the table into monthly figures with Indian digit grouping.
# Glassdoor India "most likely range" of base pay (25th to 75th percentile), read on 19 October 2026.
# Annual figures in lakh rupees (1 lakh = 1,00,000). Monthly = annual / 12, before PF and tax.
roles = {
"Junior Data Analyst": (3, 6, 5),
"Junior Data Scientist": (4, 8, 6),
"Prompt Engineer": (4, 9, 6),
"Associate AI Engineer": (4, 11, 6),
"AI Engineer": (7, 18, 10),
}
def inr(n): # Indian digit grouping: 1,50,000
s = str(n)
if len(s) <= 3: return s
head, tail = s[:-3], s[-3:]
parts = []
while len(head) > 2: parts.insert(0, head[-2:]); head = head[:-2]
return ",".join([head] + parts) + "," + tail
def month(lakh): return "Rs " + inr(round(lakh * 100000 / 12))
print(f"{'Role':<22} {'Range (LPA)':<12} {'Per month, before deductions'}")
for role, (lo, hi, avg) in roles.items():
print(f"{role:<22} {lo}-{hi:<10} {month(lo)} to {month(hi)} (average {month(avg)})")
Real output (19 October 2026):
Role Range (LPA) Per month, before deductions
Junior Data Analyst 3-6 Rs 25,000 to Rs 50,000 (average Rs 41,667)
Junior Data Scientist 4-8 Rs 33,333 to Rs 66,667 (average Rs 50,000)
Prompt Engineer 4-9 Rs 33,333 to Rs 75,000 (average Rs 50,000)
Associate AI Engineer 4-11 Rs 33,333 to Rs 91,667 (average Rs 50,000)
AI Engineer 7-18 Rs 58,333 to Rs 1,50,000 (average Rs 83,333)
These are gross monthly figures. Your bank credit will be lower after provident fund (PF), professional tax and income tax, and it depends on your salary structure and tax regime.
5. Worked example 2: CTC vs in-hand on a dummy offer
Offer letters show CTC (cost to company): everything the company spends on you in a year. Some parts never reach your bank every month. Here is a dummy offer, made up for learning:
DUMMY OFFER: Associate AI Engineer, CTC Rs 7,00,000 per year
Basic salary 2,80,000
HRA 1,40,000
Special allowance 1,94,400
Employer PF 33,600
Performance bonus 52,000 (paid yearly, if targets are met)
Total CTC 7,00,000
A prompt to read your own offer (use dummy or masked numbers, never upload the real letter with your PAN):
Here is a salary breakup from an Indian offer letter: [paste the lines above].
1. Which parts are paid every month, which once a year, and which never reach my bank?
2. What is my fixed monthly gross?
3. What deductions should I expect, as a list (no exact tax figure)?
Show the working. Tell me what to confirm with HR.
Expected output (yours will be similar, not the same): the employer PF (33,600) and the yearly bonus (52,000) are taken out of the monthly figure; the fixed monthly gross is (2,80,000 + 1,40,000 + 1,94,400) ÷ 12 = 51,200; deductions to expect are employee PF, professional tax and income tax (TDS). Check the maths yourself; AI can make arithmetic mistakes.
Ravindra Bagale's Tip
Many freshers compare two offers by CTC alone and pick the bigger number, then find the monthly credit is smaller. Always compare the fixed monthly gross and ask HR which parts are variable.
6. Worked example 3: check the number for your city and company
A national range is a start. Before you negotiate, check the exact title in your city:
- Open Glassdoor India and search the exact job title, then filter by your city.
- Open AmbitionBox and the company's page, and look at the same title and experience level.
- Read 5 current job posts on Naukri or LinkedIn for that role and city. Some show a salary band.
- Write the 3 numbers side by side with the date you checked.
A prompt to compare what you found:
I am a fresher in [city] with an offer for [title] at [company type].
Here are numbers I found today: Glassdoor [range], AmbitionBox [range],
job posts [bands]. Explain why they differ and suggest a fair range to ask for.
Do not invent any other numbers.
Expected output (yours will be similar, not the same): a short note that the sources measure different groups (self-reported pay vs. advertised bands), and a suggested ask inside the overlap of your numbers. If the tool adds numbers you did not give it, ignore them.
7. What actually raises a fresher's offer
- Proof of the higher-paid work: a repo where you call a model API, a RAG bot with tests, or an agent with guardrails.
- A domain plus AI: accounts, HR, sales or healthcare knowledge with AI skills is rarer than AI skills alone.
- Clear communication: you explain your project in 2 minutes and answer "why" questions.
- One relevant certificate, not five. See the free courses guide and the certification chapter.
Never pay anyone who promises an "AI job with a guaranteed salary". Real employers do not charge fees; report such offers on 1930.
8. Beginner mistakes and quick fixes
| Mistake | What happens | Quick fix |
|---|---|---|
| Trusting one blog's salary number | Wrong expectation | Check 2 or 3 sources with dates |
| Reading LPA as monthly | Shock at the first payslip | Divide by 12, then expect deductions |
| Comparing offers by CTC only | The smaller fixed pay wins by mistake | Compare fixed monthly gross |
| Using a senior average as a fresher | Asking for far too much | Use Junior or Associate titles |
| Uploading a real offer letter to AI | Personal data exposed | Mask names, PAN and numbers |
| Paying for a "guaranteed" job | Money lost | Never pay; report on 1930 |
9. Try at home
Try at home
- Pick the role you want from the table.
- Run the script and note the monthly range.
- Check the same title on Glassdoor for your city.
- Check the same title on AmbitionBox.
- Read 5 job posts and note any salary bands.
- Write your fair ask with the date you checked.
Recap
In short
- Glassdoor India, 19 October 2026: Junior Data Analyst ₹3L to ₹6L, Junior Data Scientist ₹4L to ₹8L, Prompt Engineer ₹4L to ₹9L, Associate AI Engineer ₹4L to ₹11L, AI Engineer ₹7L to ₹18L (base pay, middle half).
- The real work behind the title decides the pay; coding, RAG and deployment sit at the upper end.
- Divide yearly pay by 12 for gross monthly pay; in-hand is lower after PF and tax.
- Compare offers by fixed monthly gross, not CTC.
- Check your city and company on 2 or 3 sources before you negotiate.
- Never pay for a job offer.
Pick your role, check today's range for your city, and build the one project that moves you to the upper half. The number follows the proof.

Frequently asked questions
What is the salary of a prompt engineer in India for freshers?
On 19 October 2026, Glassdoor India showed a most likely base-pay range of ₹4L to ₹9L a year for Prompt Engineer, across all experience levels. Freshers usually start in the lower part of that range.
What is the AI engineer salary in India per month?
Glassdoor India showed ₹7L to ₹18L a year for AI Engineer (all levels), which is about ₹58,333 to ₹1,50,000 a month before deductions. Entry titles such as Associate AI Engineer showed ₹4L to ₹11L a year.
Is CTC the same as in-hand salary?
No. CTC includes employer PF, yearly bonuses and other costs. In-hand pay is the fixed monthly gross minus employee PF, professional tax and income tax.
Which AI job pays the most for freshers?
Roles that involve code, such as Associate AI Engineer and GenAI developer, showed higher ranges than prompt-writing or labelling roles. The skills you can prove matter more than the title.
Where can I check AI salaries for my city?
Search the exact title and city on Glassdoor India and AmbitionBox, and read current job posts on Naukri or LinkedIn. Note the date, because the numbers change often.
