Claude for Excel vs ChatGPT for Excel: Add-in Setup, Plans and Prompts
Both are official add-ins that open a chat panel inside Excel. As of 25 October 2026, Claude for Excel needs a paid Claude plan (Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise) and works in Excel on Windows, Mac and the web. ChatGPT for Excel works in Excel and Google Sheets and is available on Free and Go with lower limits, and on paid plans. Install either one from Home → Add-ins. We do not quote rupee prices here; check claude.com/pricing and chatgpt.com/pricing. Always test AI formulas on a copy of your file.
Suppose Sneha, an accounts trainee in Thane, and Daniel, an analyst in Sydney, both have a messy sales sheet. Sneha uses ChatGPT for Excel on the free plan; Daniel’s company pays for Claude. Both ask the add-in for a SUMIFS formula and a short summary, then check the totals by hand.

What you will learn in this guide
- What each add-in does
- Which plan you need
- Install from Add-ins
- Three practice prompts
- How to check AI formulas
1. Why: copy-pasting into a chat is slow
Copying a table into a chatbot and pasting formulas back is slow and error-prone. An add-in can read the sheet you have open, so its formulas use your real column names.
2. What: side-by-side
| Point | Claude for Excel vs ChatGPT for Excel |
|---|---|
| Plan needed | Claude: paid plans only. ChatGPT: Free and Go (limited) plus paid |
| Where it runs | Claude: Excel Windows, Mac, web. ChatGPT: Excel and Google Sheets |
| Install | Home → Add-ins → search the name |
| Good for | Formulas, cleaning, summaries, charts |
| Your job | Check every number before sharing |
Figure 1. Excel AI add-in in five steps: copy the file, open Add-ins, sign in, ask for one formula, check by hand.
3. How: install and first use
- Save a copy of your workbook (File → Save As).
- In Excel go to Home → Add-ins and search “Claude” or “ChatGPT”.
- Click Add, then sign in with your Claude or ChatGPT account.
- Open the panel and ask one small question about your sheet.
- Check the result on three rows by hand before trusting it.
4. Plan facts (25 Oct 2026)
- Claude docs: Claude for Excel is for paid Claude plans and runs on Excel for Windows, Mac and web.
- OpenAI Help: ChatGPT for Excel works in Excel and Google Sheets; Free and Go have lower limits.
- Company accounts may block add-ins; ask your IT team.
5. Worked example 1: one formula (start here)
Sheet has columns A=Date, B=Region, C=Amount. Ask:
In this sheet, write a formula for cell F2 that adds Amount (column C)
only where Region (column B) is "West". Explain it in one line.
Expected output (yours will be similar, not the same):
=SUMIFS(C:C,B:B,"West") — adds Amount where Region is West.
6. Worked example 2: clean messy names
Ask the add-in:
Column A has customer names with extra spaces and mixed case,
like " riya SHARMA " and "tom lee".
Add a formula in column B that trims spaces and makes Proper Case.
Expected output (yours will be similar, not the same):
=PROPER(TRIM(A2)) → "Riya Sharma", "Tom Lee"
7. Worked example 3: summary for your manager
Ask for a short summary:
Summarise this sales sheet in 4 bullets for my manager:
total sales, best region, worst month, one suggestion.
Show the formula you used for each number.
Expected output (yours will be similar, not the same):
4 bullets, e.g. "Total ₹4,82,000 (=SUM(C:C))", each with its formula so you can check.
Totals here are sample numbers; your sheet decides the real ones.
Names, amounts and companies in the examples are made up for practice.
8. Common mistakes
| Mistake | Risk | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Testing on the original file | Data lost | Use a copy |
| Pasting customer PAN or phone lists | Privacy risk | Remove personal data |
| Trusting totals blindly | Wrong report | Spot-check rows |
| Expecting Claude add-in on free plan | Will not work | Needs paid plan |
| Vague prompts | Wrong columns | Name the columns |
9. Try at home
Try at home
- Install one add-in on a copy of a practice sheet.
- Ask for a SUMIFS formula.
