Claude AI Free vs Pro in India (2026): Price, Limits and Which Plan to Pick

Claude's Free plan costs ₹0 and already includes chat on web, desktop and phone, web search, file creation, memory and up to 5 Projects. Claude Pro is listed by Anthropic at $20 a month, or $17 a month with the $200 annual plan (before tax). In the Indian App Store on 19 October 2026, Pro was ₹1,999 a month or ₹19,900 a year, and Max was ₹12,900 (5x) or ₹24,900 (20x) a month. Pro adds at least 5 times the Free usage per 5-hour window, Claude Code, Research, Opus models and full Projects. Pick Pro only if you hit the Free limit often.

"Sir, should I pay for Claude?" My answer is always another question: how often does the Free plan stop you? Claude's limits work differently from a simple message count, and the price you see depends on where you pay. In this guide you will see the plans side by side with official numbers, work out the real yearly cost in rupees with a small script, and run a one-week test that tells you whether Pro is worth it for you.

What you will learn in this guide

  • What Claude Free already gives you
  • Pro and Max prices, in dollars and rupees
  • How Claude's usage limits work
  • Monthly vs annual cost, with a script
  • A one-week test before paying
  • How to cancel and stay safe

1. Suppose Aditi hits "limit reached" in the middle of her report

Suppose Aditi, a freelance content writer in Nagpur, pastes a long client brief into Claude. After a few rounds of edits she sees a message that she has reached her limit and must wait. Should she pay ₹1,999 a month? Maybe, but only if this happens often. One bad afternoon is not a reason to pay for a year.

2. The plans side by side (checked on 19 October 2026)

Free Pro Max
Price (Anthropic, before tax) $0 $20 a month, or $200 a year ($17 a month) From $100 a month (5x) or $200 (20x), monthly only
Price in the India App Store ₹0 ₹1,999 a month or ₹19,900 a year ₹12,900 (5x) or ₹24,900 (20x) a month
Usage Everyday use At least 5x Free per 5-hour window 5x or 20x Pro per 5-hour window
Models Sonnet, Haiku Adds Opus and more Same as Pro, higher output limits
Projects Up to 5 Yes Yes
Claude Code, Research No Yes Yes
Web search, memory, file creation, voice Yes Yes Yes

How to read this:

  1. Dollar prices on Anthropic's page do not include tax. The App Store prices are what Apple shows in India.
  2. Web checkout in rupees: news reports from July 2026 say Anthropic began showing rupee prices with GST on the web. Web and app-store prices can differ, so read the amount on your own checkout screen.
  3. Payment: reports say UPI is not offered yet; you pay by card or through the App Store or Google Play.
  4. Max is for people who use Claude all day. Most learners never need it.
Picking a Claude plan in five steps Steps from top to bottom: 1 Start on Free, Chat, search, 5 Projects; 2 Log the limit for a week, How many days it stops you; 3 Try one month of Pro, Only if it blocks real work; 4 Check the checkout price, Web, App Store or Google Play; 5 Annual plan last, Only after a good month. 1Start on FreeChat, search, 5 Projects 2Log the limit for a weekHow many days it stops you 3Try one month of ProOnly if it blocks real work 4Check the checkout priceWeb, App Store or Google Play 5Annual plan lastOnly after a good month

Figure 1. Picking a Claude plan: start on Free, count how often you hit the limit for a week, try one month of Pro if it blocks real work, and choose the annual plan only after that.

3. How Claude's limits work

Claude does not give you a fixed number of messages. From Anthropic's pricing page:

  1. Limits reset on a rolling 5-hour window. Paid plans also have a weekly limit.
  2. Long chats and big files use more. A 40-page PDF and a 30-message chat use far more than a short question.
  3. Everything shares one pool: web, desktop, phone and Claude Code.
  4. Check where you stand in Settings, then Usage.

So the fix for "limit reached" is often a habit change before it is a payment: start a new chat for a new task, and attach only the pages you need.

4. Worked example 1: the real yearly cost in rupees (Python)

This script compares paying monthly with the annual plan, using the India App Store prices.

# Claude plan prices in India, from the App Store (India) listing, read on 19 October 2026 (rupees, as shown).
APP = {"Pro monthly": 1999, "Pro annual": 19900, "Max 5x monthly": 12900, "Max 20x monthly": 24900}

def inr(n):                      # Indian digit grouping: 1,23,456
    s = str(round(n))
    if len(s) <= 3: return s
    head, tail = s[:-3], s[-3:]
    parts = []
    while len(head) > 2: parts.insert(0, head[-2:]); head = head[:-2]
    return ",".join([head] + parts) + "," + tail

year_monthly = APP["Pro monthly"] * 12
print("Pro paid monthly for 12 months: Rs", inr(year_monthly))
print("Pro annual plan: Rs", inr(APP["Pro annual"]))
print("Saving with annual:             Rs", inr(year_monthly - APP["Pro annual"]))
print("Annual plan per month:          Rs", inr(APP["Pro annual"] / 12))
print("Months of monthly Pro that cost the same as annual:", round(APP["Pro annual"] / APP["Pro monthly"], 1))
print()
def suggest(days_hit_limit_per_week, needs_claude_code, long_files):
    if days_hit_limit_per_week == 0 and not needs_claude_code:
        return "Free"
    if days_hit_limit_per_week >= 5 and long_files:
        return "Pro first; Max only if Pro limits still stop you most days"
    return "Pro (try 1 month before the annual plan)"
for who, args in {"Student, short chats": (0, False, False),
                  "Freelance writer, hits limit 3 days a week": (3, False, True),
                  "Developer using Claude Code daily": (6, True, True)}.items():
    print(f"{who:<44} -> {suggest(*args)}")

Real output (19 October 2026):

Pro paid monthly for 12 months: Rs 23,988
Pro annual plan:                Rs 19,900
Saving with annual:             Rs 4,088
Annual plan per month: Rs 1,658
Months of monthly Pro that cost the same as annual: 10.0

Student, short chats                         -> Free
Freelance writer, hits limit 3 days a week -> Pro (try 1 month before the annual plan)
Developer using Claude Code daily -> Pro first; Max only if Pro limits still stop you most days

The annual plan costs the same as 10 months of the monthly plan. That saving only helps if you will still use Claude in month 11, so try one month first.

5. Worked example 2: a one-week test before you pay

Keep this simple log on paper or in a note for 7 days while you use Free:

Day Hit the limit? What was I doing Could a new chat or smaller file have helped?
Mon No Email replies -
Tue Yes Long client brief, 25 edits Yes, start a fresh chat after the outline
Wed No Summary of a 5-page PDF -

A prompt to read your log:

Here is my Claude usage log for one week: [paste the table].
1. How many days did the limit stop real work?
2. Which habits used the most (long chats, big files, many retries)?
3. Suggest 3 changes to stay on Free, and say honestly if Pro makes sense.

Expected output (yours will be similar, not the same): a short count, such as "the limit stopped work on 2 of 7 days", habit tips like "start a new chat after each section", and a verdict. If the limit blocked work on most days even after the habit changes, one month of Pro is a fair test.

Ravindra Bagale's Tip

Many people buy the annual plan on the day they first hit a limit. Change your habits for a week, then try one month. Pay for a year only when you know you will use it every week.

6. Worked example 3: Free vs Pro on one real task

Task: turn a 12-page dummy policy PDF into a one-page summary and 10 quiz questions.

  1. On Free: attach only the 12 pages, ask for the summary, then ask for the questions in the same chat.
  2. If you hit the limit: wait for the 5-hour window, or start a new chat, paste the summary (not the PDF) and ask for the questions.
  3. On Pro (only if you are testing it): run the same task and note whether it finished without a pause.

Expected output (yours will be similar, not the same): on Free the task usually finishes, sometimes with a pause on long files. If Pro saves you a wait several times a week, it is doing its job.

7. Cancel, refunds and privacy

  • Cancel: on the web or desktop app, Settings, then Billing, then Cancel. If you paid through the App Store or Google Play, cancel there. Cancel at least 24 hours before renewal.
  • After cancelling: Pro stays active until the end of the billing period, then your account moves to Free. Your chats and projects stay.
  • Refunds: Anthropic says payments are generally non-refundable outside the cases its terms or local law allow. App Store refunds are handled by Apple.
  • Privacy: Anthropic's pricing page lists model training as opt-out on Free, Pro and Max. Check the privacy setting in your account, and never paste passwords, OTPs or client secrets into any chatbot.
  • Fake offers: "Claude Pro free for 1 year" links on WhatsApp or Telegram that ask for card details are scams. Upgrade only inside claude.ai or the official app.

8. Beginner mistakes and quick fixes

Mistake What happens Quick fix
Buying the annual plan on day one Paying for months you never use One week log, then one month of Pro
One endless chat for every task Limits hit faster New chat per task
Uploading a whole book for one answer Usage gone quickly Attach only the pages you need
Comparing dollar prices with rupee prices Wrong budget Read the checkout amount in rupees
Forgetting app-store subscriptions Charged again Cancel in the App Store or Google Play
Using "free Pro" links from chats Card details stolen Upgrade only inside the official app

9. Try at home

Try at home

  1. Use Claude Free for 7 days.
  2. Log each day you hit the limit.
  3. Try the new-chat and smaller-file habits.
  4. Run the cost script with today's prices.
  5. Read the price on your own checkout screen.
  6. Decide: stay Free, or try one month of Pro.

Recap

In short

  1. Claude Free is ₹0 and includes web search, memory, file creation, voice and up to 5 Projects.
  2. Pro is $20 a month or $200 a year before tax; the India App Store showed ₹1,999 a month or ₹19,900 a year on 19 October 2026.
  3. Max starts at $100 a month (₹12,900 in the App Store) and is for all-day users.
  4. Limits reset every 5 hours; paid plans also have a weekly limit.
  5. The annual plan equals 10 months of monthly Pro: try one month first.
  6. Cancel in Settings, then Billing, or in the store you paid through.

Stay on Free until the limit stops real work most days. Then try one month of Pro, and only then think about a year.
