Birthday Photo Editing Prompts for ChatGPT and Gemini (2026): 10 Ideas That Keep the Face Real

To edit a birthday photo with AI, upload one clear photo to Gemini (Tools, then Create images) or ChatGPT, start the prompt with a Keep line that protects the face, then change only the background, decorations and light. Do not ask the AI to write the name or the date: add that text yourself in Canva or Snapseed, so it is spelled right. For a child's photo, a parent should do the edit and share it only with family.

Every month a student shows me a birthday edit where the cake says "Hapy Brithday" and the child no longer looks like the child. Both problems have the same fix: tell the AI what to keep, change one thing at a time, and type the words yourself. In this guide we make three birthday edits step by step, build the prompt with a short script, and keep the photos safe.

Full course chapter

This guide is about birthday edits. To learn how AI image tools make posters and cards, read ChatGPT Image Generation: Posters, Ghibli-Style Art and Thumbnails. For more photo prompts, read the guide Gemini Nano Banana Photo Editing Prompts.

What you will learn in this guide

  • The 5-part birthday prompt
  • A balloon background edit in Gemini
  • A birthday card in ChatGPT
  • An old photo turned into a "then and now" card
  • A prompt builder script
  • Safe sharing for children's photos

1. Suppose Meena wants a birthday photo for Siya

Suppose Meena wants a nice photo for her daughter Siya's 7th birthday. She has a simple photo taken at home: a plain wall, a tube light and a cupboard behind. She types "make a birthday photo" into an AI app. The result has a lovely cake, but Siya's face looks like a different girl and the banner reads "Hapy Brthday Siyaa". Meena is unhappy, and Siya does not recognise herself.

2. The 5-part birthday prompt (checked on 19 October 2026)

Part What to write Example
Keep What must not change Keep her face, hair, skin tone and expression the same
Change One change only Background: pastel balloons and a cake table
Light The mood Soft morning light, natural colours
Size Where you will post it 4:5 for Instagram, 9:16 for Status
Space Room for your own text Empty space at the top for text

In Gemini, tap Tools and then Create images, or simply upload the photo and type the prompt. Gemini's free plan uses the Nano Banana 2 image model, and every image carries a visible Gemini mark and an invisible SynthID watermark. ChatGPT also edits photos on the free plan, with a lower daily image limit that OpenAI does not publish.

A birthday photo edit in five steps Steps from top to bottom: 1 One clear original photo, Not a blurry WhatsApp forward; 2 Keep line first, Face, hair, skin tone, expression; 3 One change per message, Background, then decorations; 4 Check the face and hands, Ask again if they changed; 5 Add the words yourself, Name and date in Canva. 1One clear original photoNot a blurry WhatsApp forward 2Keep line firstFace, hair, skin tone, expression 3One change per messageBackground, then decorations 4Check the face and handsAsk again if they changed 5Add the words yourselfName and date in Canva

Figure 1. A birthday photo edit in five steps: pick one clear original photo, write the Keep line first, change one thing per message, check the face and hands, then add the name and date yourself.

3. Worked example 1: a balloon background in Gemini

  1. Open Gemini and upload Siya's photo.
  2. Paste this prompt:
Keep the face, hair, skin tone and expression of the girl in this photo exactly the same.
Do not change the face. Change only the background to pastel pink and white balloons with
a small cake table. Soft morning light, natural colours. 4:5 portrait. Leave empty space at
the top for text. Do not add any words.
  1. Look at the face first. If it changed, reply in the same chat: "The face changed. Use the original face from my photo and change only the background."

Expected output (yours will be similar, not the same): Siya in the same pose and the same dress, now in front of pink and white balloons with a cake table behind her, and a clear area at the top with no text.

4. Worked example 2: a birthday card in ChatGPT

  1. In ChatGPT, upload the photo and ask for a card layout, not words:
Use this photo to make a birthday card design. Keep the face exactly the same.
Put the photo in a round frame on the left, with gold confetti and a soft cream
background. Leave a large empty area on the right for my own text. No letters or numbers.
  1. Download the image. Open it in Canva (or Snapseed's Text tool) and type:
Happy 7th Birthday, Siya
12 November 2026

Expected output: a cream and gold card with Siya's photo in a circle and an empty right side. Your typed text is spelled right and is easy to change.

Ravindra Bagale's Tip

Write "No letters or numbers" in every birthday prompt. AI image models still misspell names and dates. You type the words in Canva in one minute, and you can fix them anytime without making a new image.

5. Worked example 3: a "then and now" card for a 60th birthday

Suppose Meena also wants a card for her father's 60th birthday, using one old photo and one new photo.

  1. Upload both photos in the same message.
  2. Paste:
Put these two photos side by side on one card: the old photo on the left and the new
photo on the right. Keep both faces exactly the same. Do not colour or sharpen the old
photo's face. Add a warm marigold flower border and a soft gold background. Leave space
at the bottom for text. No letters or numbers.

Expected output (yours will be similar, not the same): a card with both photos in matching frames and a marigold border. Add "Happy 60th, Baba" yourself. If the old face changed, ask again with "Keep the old photo exactly as it is."

6. Worked example 4: build the prompt with a script (Python)

Typing the same parts every time is boring. This script puts the 5 parts together and lists the text you must add yourself.

# Build a birthday photo prompt from a few choices, and list the text you should add yourself later.
def birthday_prompt(person, theme, light, size, text_on_photo):
keep = f"Keep the face, hair, skin tone and expression of {person} exactly the same. Do not change the face."
change = f"Change only the background and decorations: {theme}."
prompt = f"{keep} {change} Lighting: {light}. Size: {size}. Leave clear empty space at the top for text."
    add_later = [t for t in text_on_photo if t]
    return prompt, add_later

prompt, add_later = birthday_prompt(
person="the girl in this photo", theme="pastel balloons and a pink birthday cake table",
light="soft morning light, natural colours", size="4:5 portrait for Instagram",
    text_on_photo=["Happy 7th Birthday, Siya", "12 November 2026"])
print("PROMPT:")
print(prompt)
print("\nADD THIS TEXT YOURSELF IN CANVA OR SNAPSEED:")
for t in add_later:
    print(" -", t)
print("\nWords in prompt:", len(prompt.split()))

Real output (19 October 2026):

PROMPT:
Keep the face, hair, skin tone and expression of the girl in this photo exactly the same. Do not change the face. Change only the background and decorations: pastel balloons and a pink birthday cake table. Lighting: soft morning light, natural colours. Size: 4:5 portrait for Instagram. Leave clear empty space at the top for text.

ADD THIS TEXT YOURSELF IN CANVA OR SNAPSEED:
 - Happy 7th Birthday, Siya
 - 12 November 2026

Words in prompt: 56

Change the theme to "blue cars and stars", "a jungle with cartoon animals" or "a simple white cake on a wooden table" and run it again.

7. Ten copy-paste birthday ideas

Start each one with the Keep line from worked example 1.

  1. Change only the background to gold and black balloons, with a soft bokeh light.
  2. Change only the background to a garden party with fairy lights at night.
  3. Add a small birthday cap on the head; keep the hair and face the same.
  4. Put the photo on a polaroid frame stuck on a pastel board with tape.
  5. Change only the background to a beach at sunset with a few balloons.
  6. Make it a 9:16 WhatsApp Status image with confetti falling from the top.
  7. Add a large chocolate cake in front, with candles, at the bottom of the frame.
  8. Turn the background into a simple watercolour painting; keep the person as a real photo.
  9. For a friends' group photo: keep every face the same and add a balloon arch behind.
  10. Restore an old family photo: fix scratches only; do not change faces or add colour.

8. Safe birthday edits

  • Children's photos: the parent or guardian should do the edit. Gemini's image editing is for users 18 or older.
  • Share small: post to family groups, not public pages. Do not put the full name, school name and birth date together on a public post.
  • Ask before editing someone else's photo, even a friend's, and never edit to make fun of a person.
  • Keep the original photo. Save the edit as a new file.

9. Beginner mistakes and quick fixes

Mistake What happens Quick fix
No Keep line The face changes Start with the Keep line
Asking AI to write the name Spelling mistakes "No letters or numbers"; type in Canva

Blurry WhatsApp forward as input Soft, odd face Use the original camera photo
Wrong size Cut-off sides on Status Ask for 9:16 or 4:5
Posting a child's full details Privacy risk Family groups only

Frequently asked questions

What is the best prompt for birthday photo editing?

Start with a Keep line ("Keep the face, hair, skin tone and expression exactly the same"), change only the background and decorations, give the light and size, and add "No letters or numbers".

Can Gemini edit birthday photos for free?

Yes. Upload the photo in Gemini, or tap Tools and then Create images, and type your prompt. Free users get the Nano Banana 2 model, and images carry a visible Gemini mark and a SynthID watermark.

Why does the AI spell the name wrong on the cake?

Image models draw letters as shapes, so names and dates often come out wrong. Ask for no text, then type the name yourself in Canva or Snapseed.

How do I stop the AI from changing the face?

Use one clear original photo, start with the Keep line and change one thing per message. If the face still changes, reply "Use the original face from my photo and change only the background."

Is it safe to edit my child's birthday photo with AI?

Do the edit yourself as the parent, keep the original, and share it in family groups only. Do not post the child's full name, school and birth date together publicly.
