AI Avatar Video with Lip Sync: Free Tools and Steps (2026)

An AI avatar video with lip sync is a short clip where a photo or stock presenter appears to speak your script, with the mouth moving in time with the audio. On free plans you can try this today with HeyGen (up to about 3 videos a month, up to 1 minute each, watermarked), Synthesia Basic (about 10 minutes a month, watermarked, stock avatars) or Sync Labs (3 short lip-sync jobs a month, up to 20 seconds). Use only your own face and voice, or get clear written consent. Never make a deepfake of someone else.

Every week a student asks me how to make a talking-head video without a camera. The answer is simple: write a short script, pick a free avatar tool, use your own photo, and check the lips. In this guide we build one product intro, one Marathi greeting clip and one re-sync of existing audio, with a small script that times your words so you stay inside free limits.

What you will learn in this guide

  • What lip sync means in plain words
  • Free tools compared side by side
  • A HeyGen photo-avatar clip
  • A Synthesia stock-avatar clip
  • Re-syncing audio with Sync Labs
  • A script timer for free limits
  • Consent and labelling rules

1. Suppose Priya needs a product intro without a camera

Suppose Priya sells handmade candles in Pune on Instagram. She wants a 20-second talking video for her new lavender jar, but she does not want to set up lights and a tripod. She uploads her own clear photo to an AI avatar tool, pastes a short script, and gets a clip where her face appears to speak the words. That mouth movement matching the audio is called lip sync.

2. What is an AI avatar video with lip sync?

Word Simple meaning
Avatar A digital presenter: your photo, or a stock person from the tool
Script The words the avatar will say
Lip sync Mouth shapes that match the spoken audio
Watermark A logo or mark the free plan leaves on the video
Consent Clear permission to use a person's face or voice

Three common ways people make these clips:

  1. Photo + script → the tool builds voice and moves the mouth (HeyGen photo avatar, many D-ID flows).
  2. Stock avatar + script → you pick a ready-made presenter (Synthesia Basic).
  3. Existing video + new audio → the tool re-fits the mouth to new speech (Sync Labs).
An AI avatar lip-sync clip in five steps Steps from top to bottom: 1 Write a short script, About 40 to 60 words; 2 Own photo or stock avatar, Consent first, always; 3 Generate the talking clip, HeyGen, Synthesia or Sync; 4 Check mouth then words, Muted first, then with sound; 5 Label before you post, Say it is an AI avatar. 1Write a short scriptAbout 40 to 60 words 2Own photo or stock avatarConsent first, always 3Generate the talking clipHeyGen, Synthesia or Sync 4Check mouth then wordsMuted first, then with sound 5Label before you postSay it is an AI avatar

3. Free tools compared (checked on 23 October 2026)

Plans change. Open each pricing page before you rely on a number.

Tool Free allowance (Oct 2026) Your own face? Watermark / catch Best first use
HeyGen Free Up to 3 videos a month (1–3 by region), up to 1 minute each Yes: photo avatars (up to 3) and 1 custom video avatar Watermarked; Free sharing often 720p Short product or course intro with your photo
Synthesia Basic About 10 minutes of video or dubbing a month, plus 500 credits Stock avatars on Basic; personal avatars on paid plans Synthesia watermark Training-style explainer with a stock presenter
Sync Labs free trial 3 lip-sync generations a month, up to 20 seconds (15 s for sync-3) Uses the face already in your video Short clips only; no card needed Fix mouth to a new voice track
D-ID trial Trial minutes in your account (check the site) Yes: upload a face image Full-screen watermark on trial Quick photo-to-talking test

HeyGen Creator starts at about $29 a month and removes the watermark. Synthesia Starter starts at about $29 a month billed monthly. Prices and limits change: check heygen.com/pricing and synthesia.io/pricing.

4. Worked example 1: a 20-second product intro in HeyGen

  1. Open HeyGen and create a free account (no card needed to try).
  2. Choose a photo avatar and upload only your own clear, front-facing photo (good light, mouth closed or soft smile, no other people in frame).
  3. Paste this script (keep it under one minute on Free):
Hello, I am Priya from Pune. This is our new lavender soy candle.
It burns for about thirty hours. Soft scent, no strong smoke.
Order on Instagram. Thank you for supporting a small home business.
  1. Pick a calm English voice, or a voice that matches your language if the free language list includes it.
  2. Generate the video. Watch it once with sound off (mouth shapes) and once with sound on (words).
  3. If Free leaves a watermark, use the clip for a private draft or test; remove branding only on a paid plan if you need a clean public post.

Expected output (yours will be similar, not the same): a short talking clip of Priya's photo, lips moving with the script, HeyGen mark on Free, length well under 1 minute.

Ravindra Bagale's Tip

Students often paste a 3-minute speech and burn the free quota on one failed take. Write 40 to 60 words first, time them with the script below, then generate. One clean short clip beats three long messy ones.

5. Worked example 2: a Marathi greeting with a Synthesia stock avatar

Priya also wants a polite Marathi line for local customers, but she does not want to upload her face to a second tool today.

  1. Open Synthesia and stay on the free Basic plan.
  2. Pick a stock avatar (Basic is built around stock presenters; personal avatars are a paid-plan feature).
  3. Paste:
Namaskar. Mi Priya. Amchi lavender candle Instagram var available aahe.
Order karnyasathi bio madhil link bagha. Dhanyavad.
  1. Choose a Marathi or multilingual voice if your account lists it; otherwise write the same meaning in simple English and add Marathi captions yourself in CapCut or InShot later.
  2. Generate and preview. Expect a Synthesia watermark on Basic.

Expected output: a short stock-avatar greeting. Good for practice and internal demos. For a public brand face, prefer your own consented photo on a tool that supports photo avatars, and label the post as AI.

6. Worked example 3: re-sync a clip with Sync Labs

Suppose Priya already has a 15-second phone video of herself speaking English, and a cleaner audio file of the same lines. She wants the mouth to match the new audio.

  1. Open Sync Labs and use the free trial (3 generations a month, no card).
  2. Upload the video and the new audio. Keep both under 20 seconds on the free trial (15 seconds if you use sync-3).
  3. Run lip sync and download the result.
  4. Check teeth, chin and edges. If the face warps, shorten the clip or use a more front-facing take.

Expected output: the same video frames with mouth motion closer to the new audio. This is re-sync, not a full avatar studio.

7. Worked example 4: time your script with Python (real output)

Free plans care about seconds. This small script estimates spoken length at about 2.5 clear English words per second.

# Estimate spoken seconds from a short avatar script (about 2.5 words per second).
def spoken_seconds(script, words_per_sec=2.5):
    words = [w for w in script.replace("\n", " ").split() if w]
    secs = round(len(words) / words_per_sec, 1)
    return len(words), secs

script = """Hello, I am Priya from Pune. Today I will show three free ways
to make a short AI avatar video with lip sync. Use only your own photo,
keep the script under forty seconds, and always label the video as AI generated."""
n, s = spoken_seconds(script)
print("WORDS:", n)
print("ESTIMATED SECONDS:", s)
print("FITS_FREE_HEYGEN_1MIN:", s <= 60)
print("FITS_SYNC_FREE_20S:", s <= 20)
print("TRIM_TO_20S_WORDS:", int(20 * 2.5))

Real output (23 October 2026):

WORDS: 42
ESTIMATED SECONDS: 16.8
FITS_FREE_HEYGEN_1MIN: True
FITS_SYNC_FREE_20S: True
TRIM_TO_20S_WORDS: 50

Change the script and run again before you spend a free generation.

  • Only your face and voice, or written consent from the person (date, name, what you may post).
  • Do not make a politician, celebrity, teacher, boss or relative "say" words they never said.
  • Label the post: "AI avatar video" or "synthetic video" in the caption.
  • Keep originals: save the photo and the script file.
  • Children: a parent or guardian must control the account and posting.
  • If someone sends you a scary "your relative is speaking" clip, treat it as a possible scam and read Deepfake and AI Voice Clone Scams: How to Spot Them.

9. Beginner mistakes and quick fixes

Mistake What happens Quick fix
Long script on free plan Quota burns, clip cuts off 40–60 words; run the timer
Blurry group photo Wrong face, weak lips One clear solo photo
No consent Legal and trust risk Own face only, or written OK
Ignoring the watermark Brand looks unfinished Draft on free; clean export on paid if needed
Skipping the mouth check Uncanny or funny clip Watch once muted, once with sound
Posting without an AI label Viewers feel tricked Add "AI avatar" in the caption

10. Try at home

Try at home

  1. Write a 40-word script about yourself or your small shop.
  2. Run the timer script; keep estimated seconds under 20 for Sync, under 60 for HeyGen Free.
  3. Make one clip with your own photo on HeyGen Free, or one stock-avatar clip on Synthesia Basic.
  4. Watch muted, then with sound.
  5. Post only if you used your own face (or have consent) and add an AI label.

Recap

In short

  1. Lip sync means the mouth matches the spoken audio on an AI avatar clip.
  2. Free starters: HeyGen (few short watermarked videos), Synthesia Basic (about 10 minutes, stock avatars), Sync Labs (3 short re-syncs).
  3. Use only your own photo and voice, or get written consent.
  4. Keep scripts short; time them before you generate.
  5. Check mouth shapes muted, then check the words with sound.
  6. Label every public post as an AI avatar or synthetic video.

Short script, your own face, check the lips, label the post. That is an honest AI avatar video.

Frequently asked questions

What is AI avatar lip sync in simple words?

It is a video where a photo or stock presenter appears to speak your script, and the mouth moves in time with the audio.

Which free tool should a beginner try first?

HeyGen Free if you want your own photo on a short clip; Synthesia Basic if a stock avatar is enough; Sync Labs if you only need to re-fit lips to new audio.

Can I use someone else's photo for an avatar video?

Only with clear written consent. Without consent it can harm trust and may break platform rules or the law. Never make a deepfake of a public figure or relative.

Why does my free video have a watermark?

Free plans mark synthetic video. HeyGen Free and Synthesia Basic both watermark; D-ID trial can show a full-screen mark. Paid plans remove or reduce branding — check the current pricing page.

How long should my first script be?

About 40 to 60 words (roughly 15 to 25 seconds). Stay under 20 seconds for Sync Labs free, and under 1 minute for HeyGen Free.
