How to Write a Resume with ChatGPT: ATS-Friendly Prompts with Before and After Examples

To write a resume with ChatGPT, first collect your real facts (education, projects, skills, results). Paste them with the job description, and ask ChatGPT to write short bullet points that start with an action word and use the job's keywords. Then check every line: delete anything you did not really do, keep a simple one-column layout so ATS software can read it, and never paste your Aadhaar, phone number or address into the chat.

Many students ask ChatGPT, "Write my resume", and get a beautiful page full of skills they do not have. Then the interviewer asks about one of those skills, and the interview is over in two minutes. In this guide you will use ChatGPT the right way: as an editor for your real facts, not as a story writer. We will take one fresher's weak resume and fix it, step by step, with prompts you can copy.

What you will learn in this guide

  • Collect your facts before prompting
  • Turn duties into strong bullets
  • Match a job description safely
  • Keep the resume ATS-friendly
  • Write a summary and cover note
  • Check for invented facts

1. Suppose we are a fresher applying to Infosys

Suppose we are Rahul from Nashik. We finished a BCA, did a 2-month internship at a small local software company, and built two college projects. We want to apply for a "Trainee Data Analyst" job at a large IT company like Infosys.

Here is one line from our old resume:

Responsible for making reports in Excel.

This line is weak. It says what the job was, not what we did or what changed. A recruiter reads many resumes for each job, so a weak line is easy to skip.

Here is the same line after the method in this guide:

Built 6 weekly sales reports in Excel using SUMIFS and pivot tables, cutting the
manager's report preparation time from about 3 hours to 1 hour.

Everything in the new line is true: Rahul really made 6 reports, really used SUMIFS and pivot tables, and his manager really said it saved about 2 hours. ChatGPT only helped him say it clearly. That is the rule for the whole guide.

2. What ChatGPT is good at, and what it must not do

ChatGPT is good at ChatGPT must not do
Rewriting your rough notes into clear bullets Adding skills you do not have
Finding keywords in a job description Inventing numbers like "increased sales by 40%"
Making a long resume shorter Choosing fake job titles or company names
Fixing grammar and tone Deciding the truth for you
Writing a first draft of a summary or cover note Replacing your own final check

Why? ChatGPT guesses likely words. A resume full of likely words sounds impressive, but it may not be true. You learnt this in What Is Generative AI and How Does ChatGPT Work?: the model can sound right and still be wrong.

3. Step 1: collect your real facts (before you open ChatGPT)

Open a notes app and write these lists. Rough English is fine.

  1. Education: degree, college, year, marks (only if good).
  2. Internships or jobs: company, dates, what you did, any result you can measure.
  3. Projects: name, tools used, what it does, a link if you have one (GitHub, a live site).
  4. Skills: only the ones you can explain in an interview.
  5. Certificates: the exact name and who issued it.
  6. Results with numbers: reports made, users, hours saved, marks, rank. Only real numbers.

Replace private details with placeholders. Write [PHONE], [EMAIL], [CITY] instead of the real ones. You will add the real ones yourself in the final file. Never type your Aadhaar, PAN, date of birth or home address into any AI chat.

4. Step 2: turn each duty into a strong bullet

Use this prompt for your experience and projects:

You are an experienced IT recruiter in India.
Rewrite my rough notes below into resume bullet points.
Rules:
- Start each bullet with a strong action verb (Built, Created, Analysed, Automated).
- Use only the facts I give. Do not add any skill, tool or number that is not in my notes.
- If a number would help but I did not give one, write [ADD NUMBER?] instead of guessing.
- Each bullet must be under 25 words.

My notes:
Internship at a small software company in Nashik, Jun-Jul 2026.
Made weekly sales reports in Excel for the manager. Used SUMIFS and pivot tables.
6 reports. Manager said it saved him around 2 hours a week.
Cleaned customer data in Excel, removed duplicates, about 4,000 rows.

Expected output (yours will be similar, not the same):

- Built 6 weekly sales reports in Excel using SUMIFS and pivot tables, saving the
manager about 2 hours of work each week.
- Cleaned a 4,000-row customer dataset in Excel by removing duplicates and fixing
  formats, for accurate monthly reporting.

Look at what happened. ChatGPT used our numbers (6 reports, 2 hours, 4,000 rows). It did not invent a percentage. The [ADD NUMBER?] rule stops it from guessing.

Ravindra Bagale's Tip

Students accept the first draft because it sounds good. Read every bullet and ask yourself: "Can I explain this for 2 minutes in an interview?" If not, delete it or make it smaller. One true line beats three impressive ones.

5. Step 3: match the job description (without lying)

Many companies use an ATS (Applicant Tracking System). It is software that stores resumes and helps recruiters search them by keywords. If the job asks for "Power BI" and your resume says only "dashboards", a keyword search may miss you.

Copy the job description from the company's career page. Then use this prompt:

Here is a job description and my resume.
1. List the 10 most important skills and keywords in the job description.
2. For each one, tell me: is it already in my resume, is it missing, or is it
something I have but wrote with different words?
3. Do NOT rewrite my resume yet. Do NOT suggest adding skills I have not shown.

Job description:
[paste the job description]

My resume:
[paste your resume text, with [PHONE] and [EMAIL] placeholders]

Expected output (similar, not the same): a table with keywords like "SQL", "Excel", "Power BI", "data cleaning" and "communication", each marked present, missing or "same skill, different words".

Now act on it:

  • "Different words" keywords: use the job's exact word. If you made "Excel dashboards" and the job says "reporting", you can write "Excel reporting dashboards".
  • "Missing" keywords that you really know: add them where you used them, for example in a project.
  • "Missing" keywords you do not know: do not add them. Learn them later and add them then.

6. Step 4: keep the resume ATS-friendly

AI tools often suggest fancy designs. ATS software reads plain text best. Follow these rules:

Do Avoid
One column, top to bottom Two columns, text boxes, tables for layout
Standard headings: Summary, Skills, Experience, Projects, Education, Certifications Creative headings like "My Journey"
A normal font like Calibri or Arial, size 10 to 12 Icons, skill bars, star ratings, photos inside the text
The file type the job portal asks for (often PDF or .docx) A scanned image of your resume
1 page for a fresher 3 pages of school details

Ask ChatGPT to do the layout check for you:

Check my resume text below for ATS problems. List any heading that is not standard,
any line longer than 2 lines, and any skill that appears without proof in
Experience or Projects. Do not rewrite it, just list the problems.

7. Step 5: summary, cover note and LinkedIn "About"

Once the bullets are true and checked, ChatGPT can write the short parts quickly.

Summary (3 lines at the top of the resume):

Write a 3-line resume summary for a fresher applying for a Trainee Data Analyst role.
Use only these facts: BCA 2026, internship in Excel reporting, 2 projects (sales
dashboard in Power BI, a Python script to clean CSV files). No buzzwords like
"passionate" or "hard-working". Under 50 words.

Cover note for an email or Naukri application:

Write a 100-word cover note for this job, using my resume below. Polite, simple
Indian English. Mention one project that matches the job. End with my name
and [PHONE].

LinkedIn About: "Turn my summary into a LinkedIn About section of 120 words, first person, friendly but professional."

8. Step 6: the final truth check

Before you send, run this checklist yourself. Do not ask the AI to do this part.

  1. Every skill in the Skills list appears in at least one project or job.
  2. Every number is real and you can say where it came from.
  3. Company names, dates and titles match your offer letter or certificate.
  4. Your real phone, email and city are added back in place of the placeholders.
  5. Spelling of the company you are applying to is correct.
  6. The file name is clear, like Rahul_Patil_Data_Analyst_Resume.pdf.

9. Which AI tool should I use?

The same prompts work in all four common tools. All four have free plans with limits (October 2026); limits and prices change, so check each tool's pricing page.

Tool Good point for resumes
ChatGPT Very good at rewriting bullets and following "do not add" rules
Gemini Can read a Google Docs or PDF resume you upload
Claude Good at keeping a calm, natural tone in cover notes
Microsoft Copilot Built into Word on Microsoft 365 plans, so you can edit in the same file

10. Beginner mistakes and quick fixes

Mistake Quick fix
"Write my resume" with no facts Collect facts first (section 3), then prompt
Accepting invented numbers Add "use only my facts, write [ADD NUMBER?] instead of guessing"
Copying every keyword from the job Add only skills you can prove and explain
A two-column Canva design Use one column with standard headings
Pasting phone, address, Aadhaar into the chat Use placeholders and add real details at the end
The same resume for every job Run the keyword step (section 5) for each important job

11. Try at home

Try at home

  1. Pick one real job post from a company career page or Naukri.
  2. Write your facts in rough notes (section 3), with placeholders for private details.
  3. Run the bullet prompt (section 4) on your experience or one project.
  4. Run the keyword prompt (section 5) with that job post.
  5. Fix your resume using only true information.
  6. Do the final truth check (section 8) and save it as a PDF with a clear file name.

Recap

In short

  1. ChatGPT is an editor for your real facts, not a writer of new facts.
  2. Collect facts first, with placeholders for phone, email and address.
  3. Turn duties into short bullets that start with an action verb and use real numbers.
  4. Use the job description to find keywords, then add only the skills you really have.
  5. Keep one column and standard headings so ATS software can read your resume.
  6. Do the final truth check yourself before you send.

Rewrite just your top three bullets tonight with the prompt in section 4. A resume improves one true line at a time.

Frequently asked questions

Can recruiters tell if ChatGPT wrote my resume?

They notice generic lines and skills you cannot explain. If every line is true and specific, it does not matter that AI helped with the wording.

What is an ATS-friendly resume?

A resume that resume software can read easily: one column, standard headings, plain text and the job's own keywords, saved in the file type the portal asks for.

Is it safe to upload my resume to ChatGPT?

Remove private details first. Replace your phone, email and address with placeholders, and never share Aadhaar, PAN or your date of birth.

Should I add every skill from the job description?

No. Add only skills you have used and can explain in an interview. Learn the missing ones, then add them.

How long should a fresher's resume be?

One page is enough for most freshers. Keep only the education, projects, internships and skills that match the job.
