AI Translate English to Marathi and Hindi (2026): 3 Free Tools and How to Check the Result

For free English to Marathi or Hindi translation, use Google Translate for quick text, photos of signs and whole documents (on a computer: .docx, .pdf, .pptx or .xlsx up to 10 MB), the Government of India's Bhashini app for voice and conversation in 22 Indian languages, and ChatGPT or Gemini when tone matters, such as a polite notice or a WhatsApp message to elders. No tool is right every time: check names, numbers and dates, and read the result back in English before you send anything important.

In my classes in Maharashtra, half the students write messages in English and their parents read them in Marathi. Translation tools are now very good, but they still make small mistakes that matter: a time of 7:30 that becomes 7, a "please pay by" that sounds rude, a name turned into a word. In this guide we translate a real-style society notice three ways, check it with a back-translation and a short script, and pick the right tool for each job.

Full course chapter

This guide is about translation. To learn how to ask AI for the right tone in any message, read AI for Emails and WhatsApp Business Messages. To speak to AI in your language on your phone, read How to Use AI on Your Phone: Voice, Camera and Gemini Live.

What you will learn in this guide

  • Which free tool fits which job
  • Translating a notice in Google Translate
  • Tone-aware translation with ChatGPT
  • Voice translation with Bhashini
  • Back-translation to catch mistakes
  • A number-check script

1. Suppose Prakash must send a society notice

Suppose Prakash is the secretary of a housing society in Pune. He has written a notice in English for the WhatsApp group, but many senior members read Marathi, and some new families prefer Hindi. He pastes it into a translator and sends it without reading. The Marathi version says the meeting is at 7, not 7:30, and drops the payment date. Ten people come early and nobody pays on time.

2. The three free tools (checked on 19 October 2026)

Tool Best for Good to know
Google Translate Quick text, camera on signs and menus, whole documents Document translation works on a computer only; up to 10 MB, PDFs up to 300 pages; text inside images in a document is not translated
Bhashini (MeitY, Government of India) Speaking and listening, two-person conversations, 22 Indian languages Free app on Android and iPhone; still marked beta in the store
ChatGPT or Gemini Tone: polite, formal, simple; explaining a word Ask for a back-translation; check every number
A safe translation in five steps Steps from top to bottom: 1 Short clear English, One idea per sentence; 2 Pick the tool, Translate, Bhashini or ChatGPT; 3 Check the facts, Names, numbers, dates, amounts; 4 Back-translate, Read the meaning in English; 5 Native reader, For anything public or important. 1Short clear EnglishOne idea per sentence 2Pick the toolTranslate, Bhashini or ChatGPT 3Check the factsNames, numbers, dates, amounts 4Back-translateRead the meaning in English 5Native readerFor anything public or important

Figure 1. A safe translation in five steps: write short clear English, translate with the right tool, check names, numbers and dates, back-translate to English, then ask a native reader for anything important.

3. Worked example 1: the notice in Google Translate

The English notice:

The society meeting is on 25 October at 7:30 pm. Maintenance is Rs 1,850 per month; pay by 5 November.
  1. Open translate.google.com (or the app), set English to Marathi.
  2. Paste the notice. Read the result once slowly.
  3. Swap the languages and paste the Marathi back to see the English meaning.

Expected output (yours will be similar, not the same):

सोसायटीची बैठक २५ ऑक्टोबरला संध्याकाळी ७:३० वाजता आहे. देखभाल शुल्क दरमहा ₹१,८५० आहे; ५ नोव्हेंबरपर्यंत भरा.

Marathi text often uses Devanagari digits (२५, ७:३०). They are correct; just make sure each one matches your English number.

4. Worked example 2: tone with ChatGPT or Gemini

A word-for-word translation can sound harsh to elders. Ask for tone and a check in one prompt:

Translate this society notice into simple, polite Marathi for senior members, and
also into simple Hindi. Keep all dates, times and amounts exactly the same, in
0-9 digits. Then translate your Marathi back into English so I can check it.

Notice: The society meeting is on 25 October at 7:30 pm. Maintenance is Rs 1,850
per month; pay by 5 November.

Expected output (yours will be similar, not the same):

Back to English: A humble request to all members: the society meeting will be held on 25 October at 7:30 in the evening. The monthly maintenance is Rs 1,850; please pay by 5 November.

Ravindra Bagale's Tip

Always ask for a back-translation. You may not read Marathi or Hindi perfectly, but you can read English. If the back-translation changes a time, an amount or the meaning, the translation is wrong, whatever tool made it.

5. Worked example 3: speak with Bhashini

  1. Install Bhashini from the Play Store or App Store (publisher: Ministry of Electronics and IT / National e-Governance Division).
  2. Choose Converse (conversation), set English and Marathi.
  3. Prakash speaks a sentence in English; the app shows and speaks it in Marathi for a senior member, who can reply in Marathi.

Expected output: each spoken sentence appears as text in both languages and is read aloud. Speak in short sentences, one idea at a time, in a quiet room.

6. Worked example 4: check the numbers with a script (Python)

Numbers are the most costly mistakes. This script reads the English text and each translation, converts Devanagari digits to 0-9, and lists any number that went missing.

# After translating, check that every number in the English text is still in the Marathi or Hindi text.
import re
DEV = str.maketrans("०१२३४५६७८९", "0123456789")   # Devanagari digits to 0-9

def numbers(text):
    return sorted(re.findall(r"\d+(?:[.,:]\d+)*", text.translate(DEV)))

def check(english, translated):
    missing = [n for n in numbers(english) if n not in numbers(translated)]
    return "OK: all numbers match" if not missing else "CHECK: missing " + ", ".join(missing)

en = "The society meeting is on 25 October at 7:30 pm. Maintenance is Rs 1,850 per month; pay by 5 November."
mr_good = "सोसायटीची बैठक २५ ऑक्टोबरला संध्याकाळी ७:३० वाजता आहे. देखभाल शुल्क दरमहा ₹१,८५० आहे; ५ नोव्हेंबरपर्यंत भरा."
mr_bad  = "सोसायटीची बैठक २५ ऑक्टोबरला संध्याकाळी ७ वाजता आहे. देखभाल शुल्क दरमहा ₹१,८५० आहे; नोव्हेंबरपर्यंत भरा."
hi_good = "सोसाइटी की बैठक 25 अक्टूबर को शाम 7:30 बजे है। मेंटेनेंस ₹1,850 प्रति माह है; 5 नवंबर तक भुगतान करें।"
for name, t in {"Marathi, version 1": mr_good, "Marathi, version 2": mr_bad, "Hindi": hi_good}.items():
    print(f"{name:<20} {check(en, t)}")

Real output (19 October 2026):

Marathi, version 1 OK: all numbers match
Marathi, version 2   CHECK: missing 5, 7:30
Hindi                OK: all numbers match

Version 2 lost "7:30" (it says only 7) and the payment date. Paste your own English text and translation into the script before you send a notice, invoice or form.

7. Privacy and when to use a human

  • Do not paste private documents such as Aadhaar, bank statements, medical reports or legal papers into a free translator.
  • Legal, medical and government forms: use a certified translator. AI can help you understand them, not replace an official translation.
  • Names and places: translators sometimes turn names into words (Kamal can become "lotus"). Ask the tool to keep names unchanged.
  • Ask one native reader before you print anything for the public.

8. Beginner mistakes and quick fixes

Mistake What happens Quick fix
Long, complex English sentences Confusing translation Short sentences, one idea each
Sending without reading Wrong time or amount goes out Back-translate to English first
Not checking numbers 7:30 becomes 7 Run the number check
Word-for-word tone Sounds rude to elders Ask ChatGPT or Gemini for polite tone
Uploading a scanned PDF Text in images is not translated Use Google Lens or camera, or type the text
Private papers in free tools Privacy risk Use a certified translator
