AI Tools for Students (2026): 4 Free Tools for Notes, Doubts and Exam Prep
Four free AI tools cover most study needs in October 2026: ChatGPT Study mode (free on all plans; it teaches step by step and quizzes you instead of just giving answers), Gemini (college students aged 18+ can claim 12 months of Google AI Plus at no cost until 31 December 2026, then ₹399 a month unless cancelled), Gemini Notebook, formerly NotebookLM (free: 50 sources per notebook, 50 chats, 3 Audio Overviews and 10 quizzes a day) and Claude Free (good for long explanations and checking your writing). Use them to understand and practise, and follow your college's rules on AI for graded work.
Students often show me ten "best AI tools" lists and ask which one to install. You do not need ten. You need one tool that explains, one that turns your own notes into quizzes, and the habit of checking answers. In this guide we set up four free tools, build a revision plan for an exam two weeks away, and use AI in a way that makes you learn more, not less.

What you will learn in this guide
- Which free tool does what
- Claiming the Gemini student offer safely
- ChatGPT Study mode, step by step
- Quizzes from your own notes
- A spaced revision plan, with a script
- Honest use for assignments
1. Suppose Tanvi's exam is in two weeks
Suppose Tanvi studies biology at a college in Kolhapur. Her exam is on 2 November and she has 5 topics, a pile of handwritten notes and lecture slides as PDFs. She asks a chatbot "explain genetics" and gets a long answer she forgets in an hour. The problem is not the tool. It is using AI to read for her instead of making her practise.
2. The four tools (checked on 19 October 2026)
| Tool | Free plan gives you | Best for | Watch out |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Study mode | Step-by-step teaching, hints and practice questions; same limits as normal Free chats | Learning a new concept, homework doubts | Not in Temporary Chats, GPTs or Projects |
| Gemini | Free chat; students 18+ can claim 12 months of Google AI Plus (2x limits, 400 GB storage) | Explanations, photos of diagrams, longer use | Card or payment method needed; ₹399 a month after the offer unless cancelled |
| Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM) | 100 notebooks, 50 sources each; daily 50 chats, 3 Audio Overviews, 10 flashcard sets, 10 quizzes | Quizzes and summaries from your own notes and slides | Answers come only from what you upload |
| Claude Free | Chat, file reading, web search, up to 5 Projects | Long explanations, feedback on your own writing | Limits reset every 5 hours |
Figure 1. A study loop with AI: learn one topic with Study mode, quiz yourself from your own notes, check mistakes, then revise 1, 3 and 7 days later.
3. Set up the tools
ChatGPT Study mode:
- Sign in at chatgpt.com or in the app.
- In a normal chat, type @study, or tap + and choose Study.
- Ask: "Teach me photosynthesis for a beginner biology exam. Ask me questions as we go."
Gemini student offer (only if you are 18+ and in college):
- Go to one.google.com/ai-student with your personal Google account.
- Choose the student offer and verify through SheerID with your college email or documents.
- Add a payment method (required), then set a reminder to cancel before the 12 months end if you do not want ₹399 a month.
Gemini Notebook: open the app or website, create a notebook, and upload your PDFs and photos of notes as sources.
Claude Free: sign up at claude.ai. Use one Project per subject (Free allows up to 5).
4. Worked example 1: learn one topic with Study mode
@study I have a biology exam on 2 November. Teach me respiration (glycolysis,
Krebs cycle, electron transport chain) at beginner level. Start by asking what I
already know. Give hints, not answers, when I am stuck. End with 5 short questions.
Expected output (yours will be similar, not the same): a first question such as "What do you think the cell gets out of breaking down glucose?", short explanations after each answer, and 5 practice questions at the end. Answer in your own words; that is where the learning happens. Check any number or fact you will write in the exam against your textbook.
5. Worked example 2: a quiz from your own notes
- In Gemini Notebook, upload your slides and photos of your notes for one topic.
- Choose Quiz (free: 10 a day) or Flashcards from the notebook tools.
- Take the quiz without looking. Write down every question you got wrong.
- Ask in the notebook chat: "Explain question 4 using only my notes, and show which page it came from."
Expected output (yours will be similar, not the same): 10 multiple-choice questions based only on your uploaded notes, and an explanation that points to the source. If a question is not in your notes, the tool should say so; that tells you a page is missing.
Ravindra Bagale's Tip
Many students ask AI to summarise a chapter and feel they have studied. Reading a summary is not revision. Make the AI ask you questions, answer from memory, and spend your time on the ones you got wrong.
6. Worked example 3: a spaced revision plan (Python)
You remember more when you revise a topic 1, 3 and 7 days after first learning it. This script builds that plan up to the day before the exam and names the tool for each job.
# A spaced revision plan: learn a topic, then quiz yourself on it 1, 3 and 7 days later.
from datetime import date, timedelta
topics = ["Cell structure", "Photosynthesis", "Respiration", "Genetics basics", "Evolution"]
start, exam = date(2026, 10, 20), date(2026, 11, 2)
TOOL = {"learn": "ChatGPT Study mode", "quiz": "Gemini Notebook quiz", "mock": "Claude: full mock paper"}
plan = {}
for i, t in enumerate(topics):
day = start + timedelta(days=i)
plan.setdefault(day, []).append(("learn", t))
for gap in (1, 3, 7):
d = day + timedelta(days=gap)
if d < exam - timedelta(days=1):
plan.setdefault(d, []).append(("quiz", t))
plan.setdefault(exam - timedelta(days=1), []).append(("mock", "all topics"))
for d in sorted(plan):
jobs = "; ".join(f"{k} {t} ({TOOL[k]})" for k, t in plan[d])
print(d.strftime("%a %d %b"), "|", jobs)
print("Days with work:", len(plan), "| exam:", exam.strftime("%a %d %b"))
Real output (19 October 2026):
Tue 20 Oct | learn Cell structure (ChatGPT Study mode)
Wed 21 Oct | quiz Cell structure (Gemini Notebook quiz); learn Photosynthesis (ChatGPT Study mode)
Thu 22 Oct | quiz Photosynthesis (Gemini Notebook quiz); learn Respiration (ChatGPT Study mode)
Fri 23 Oct | quiz Cell structure (Gemini Notebook quiz); quiz Respiration (Gemini Notebook quiz); learn Genetics basics (ChatGPT Study mode)

Sat 31 Oct | quiz Evolution (Gemini Notebook quiz)
Sun 01 Nov | mock all topics (Claude: full mock paper)
Days with work: 13 | exam: Mon 02 Nov
No day needs more than 3 jobs, and the quizzes stay within Gemini Notebook's free 10 a day. Change the topics and dates to your own and run it again.
7. Honest use: assignments, detectors and privacy
- Follow your college's AI rules. Some teachers allow AI for ideas and checking; some do not allow it for graded work. If you are not sure, ask.
- Never submit AI text as your own. Use AI to explain, quiz and give feedback on your draft; write the answer yourself.
- AI detectors are not proof either way. Keep your notes and drafts to show your own work.
- Check facts. AI makes mistakes in numbers, dates and formulas. Your textbook and teacher come first.
- Privacy: do not upload ID cards, marksheets with your roll number, or other students' work.
8. Beginner mistakes and quick fixes
| Mistake | What happens | Quick fix |
|---|---|---|
| Asking for summaries only | Forget it in a day | Ask for questions and answer from memory |
| Using ten different apps | Time lost switching | One explainer and one quiz tool |
| Submitting AI-written answers | Trouble with college rules | Write it yourself; use AI for feedback |
| Forgetting to cancel the student offer | ₹399 a month after 12 months | Set a reminder on the day you claim |
| Trusting every number | Wrong facts in the exam | Check against the textbook |
| Cramming the night before | Weak recall | Revise 1, 3 and 7 days later |
