AI for Share Market Analysis in India (2026): What AI Can Do, What It Cannot, and Scam Signs

AI chatbots such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude are useful for learning the share market: explaining terms like P/E and ROE, summarising an annual report you upload, and comparing two companies from numbers you paste. They cannot predict prices, they can show old or made-up numbers, and they are not SEBI-registered advisers. Check every number in the company's own filing, and before acting on any tip, check the sender's registration on SEBI's website. This guide is for learning, not investment advice.

Students often ask me, "Sir, which AI tells the best shares to buy?" None. AI is a fast reader and a patient teacher, not a fortune teller. And the same students forward me WhatsApp "AI trading" groups that promise 300% returns. In this guide we use AI the safe way on three real tasks, and we build a small checker that catches the most common tip-scam signs.

Full course chapter

This guide is about the share market. To learn why AI makes up numbers and how to check any answer, read Why AI Hallucinates and How to Fact-Check Any AI Answer. For other AI scams, read the guide Deepfake and AI Voice Clone Scams.

What you will learn in this guide

  • What AI is good and bad at in investing
  • Summarising an annual report you upload
  • Comparing two companies from your own numbers
  • Checking a stock tip before you act
  • A red-flag checker script
  • Where to verify and report in India

1. Suppose Rahul gets an "AI stock tip"

Suppose Rahul, a 24-year-old in Nagpur, has just opened a demat account. A message arrives: "AI-powered sure-shot picks! 300% guaranteed returns in 30 days. Join our VIP WhatsApp group today only. Pay Rs 4,999 fees." He also asks a chatbot, "Which share will go up next week?" and gets a confident list. He is ready to put his savings in. Both the message and the list are the wrong way to use AI.

2. What AI can and cannot do (checked on 19 October 2026)

Good use Not safe
Explain a term (P/E, ROE, debt-to-equity) in simple words "Which share will go up?" Nobody, and no AI, knows
Summarise an annual report or results PDF you upload Trusting a price, ratio or date from the AI's memory
Compare two companies from numbers you paste Following an "AI trading" group or app
Make a checklist of questions before you invest Treating a chatbot as a SEBI-registered adviser

Two facts to keep in mind. SEBI's own study of FY 2024-25 found that 91% of individual traders in equity futures and options (F&O) made net losses, together about ₹1,05,603 crore after costs. And SEBI's rules say that research analysts who use AI tools are fully responsible for the advice and must tell clients how they use AI. A chatbot carries no such responsibility.

Using AI safely for shares Steps from top to bottom: 1 Learn the terms, P/E, ROE, debt in simple words; 2 Upload the official report, Company, BSE or NSE website; 3 Ask with page numbers, One page for every number; 4 Check the numbers yourself, Open the page, use a calculator; 5 Verify on SEBI first, INA or INH number, SEBI Check. 1Learn the termsP/E, ROE, debt in simple words 2Upload the official reportCompany, BSE or NSE website 3Ask with page numbersOne page for every number 4Check the numbers yourselfOpen the page, use a calculator 5Verify on SEBI firstINA or INH number, SEBI Check

Figure 1. Using AI safely for shares in five steps: learn the terms, upload the official report, ask with page numbers, check the numbers yourself, and verify any adviser on SEBI before paying.

3. Worked example 1: summarise an annual report

  1. Download the company's annual report PDF from the company's investor page, or from the BSE or NSE website.
  2. Upload it to ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude, and paste:
Summarise this annual report for a beginner in 8 short points: what the company sells,
revenue and profit this year vs last year, debt, the biggest risks the company itself
lists, and any change in promoter holding. Give the page number for every number.
If something is not in the report, say "not in the report".
  1. Open two of the page numbers it gives and check the numbers yourself.

Expected output (yours will be similar, not the same): eight bullets, each with a page number, for example "Revenue from operations rose from ₹X crore to ₹Y crore (page 112)". If a page number is wrong or missing, do not trust that line.

4. Worked example 2: compare two companies from your numbers

Do not ask AI to remember numbers. Paste them yourself from the annual reports or exchange filings:

Using only these numbers, make a table and explain in simple words which company has
lower debt and better return on equity. Show your working. Do not use any other data.

Company A: net profit 120 crore, equity 800 crore, debt 200 crore
Company B: net profit 90 crore, equity 450 crore, debt 600 crore

Expected output (yours will be similar, not the same):

| Company | ROE (profit / equity) | Debt-to-equity |
| A | 120 / 800 = 15% | 200 / 800 = 0.25 |
| B | 90 / 450 = 20% | 600 / 450 = 1.33 |
B earns a higher return on its equity, but it uses much more debt. A has lower risk from debt.

Check the two divisions on a calculator. AI is good at explaining, but it can still make a maths slip.

Ravindra Bagale's Tip

Give AI the numbers; never take numbers from AI. Copy figures from the official report or the exchange website, paste them in, and ask AI only to explain. Then check one calculation yourself.

5. Worked example 3: check a tip before you act

  1. Paste the tip into a chatbot and ask:
List every red flag in this investment message, in simple words. Do not tell me
whether to buy anything.
  1. Ask the sender for their SEBI registration number. Investment advisers have numbers starting with INA, and research analysts with INH.
  2. Look the number up in the recognised intermediaries list on sebi.gov.in. Before paying any registered entity, check its UPI ID with SEBI Check: registered intermediaries collect money through special "@valid" UPI handles.

Expected output: the chatbot lists guaranteed returns, urgency, a WhatsApp group and payment to a personal UPI ID. If the person has no number or it does not match SEBI's list, stop.

6. Worked example 4: a red-flag checker (Python)

This short script checks a message for the most common tip-scam signs. It is a learning tool, not proof that a message is safe.

# Check a stock tip message for common scam red flags before you act on it.
import re
FLAGS = {
    "guaranteed or fixed returns": r"guaranteed (return|profit)|fixed return|sure.?shot|100%|no loss|double your",
    "hurry or secret": r"today only|last chance|hurry|limited seats|secret|insider",
    "move to WhatsApp or Telegram group": r"whatsapp|telegram|join (our|my) group|vip group",
    "pay to a personal UPI or account": r"upi|gpay|phonepe|paytm|send money|pay first|fees? to",
    "special app or 'institutional' account": r"institutional account|ipo allotment|block deal|download (our|the) app|apk",
    "no SEBI registration number shown": None,
}
def check(msg):
    low = msg.lower(); found = []
    for name, pat in FLAGS.items():
        if pat is None:
            if not re.search(r"\b(INA|INH)\d{9}\b", msg):
                found.append(name)
        elif re.search(pat, low):
            found.append(name)
    return found

tips = {
    "Tip A": "AI-powered sure-shot picks! 300% guaranteed returns in 30 days. Join our VIP WhatsApp group today only. Pay Rs 4,999 fees to UPI rk.profits@okbank.",
    "Tip B": "Our research note on a listed bank is attached. We are a SEBI Research Analyst, Reg. No. INH000000000. Past performance does not guarantee future returns.",
}
for name, msg in tips.items():
    f = check(msg)
    print(f"{name}: {len(f)} red flag(s)")
    for x in f:
        print("   -", x)
    print(" =>", "DO NOT ACT. Verify on SEBI first." if len(f) >= 2 else "Fewer flags. Still verify the number on SEBI's site.")

Real output (19 October 2026):

Tip A: 5 red flag(s)
   - guaranteed or fixed returns
   - hurry or secret
   - move to WhatsApp or Telegram group
   - pay to a personal UPI or account
   - no SEBI registration number shown
   => DO NOT ACT. Verify on SEBI first.
Tip B: 0 red flag(s)
   => Fewer flags. Still verify the number on SEBI's site.

Tip B uses a dummy registration number. Even with zero flags, you must still look the number up on SEBI's site.

7. Where to verify and report

  • Verify an adviser or analyst: SEBI website, recognised intermediaries list.
  • Verify a UPI ID before paying: SEBI Check.
  • Complaint against a registered broker or adviser: SEBI SCORES.
  • Fraud or money lost: call 1930 or report on cybercrime.gov.in at once.

8. Beginner mistakes and quick fixes

Mistake What happens Quick fix
Asking AI which share will go up Confident guesses Ask AI to explain, not predict
Trusting AI's numbers Old or made-up figures Paste numbers from the report
No page numbers asked Cannot check the summary Ask for a page for every number
Joining an "AI trading" group Pump-and-dump or fee scam Check SEBI registration first
Paying a personal UPI ID Money gone Use SEBI Check on the UPI ID
Starting with F&O Big losses Learn on long-term investing first

9. Try at home

Try at home

  1. Download one annual report.
  2. Ask for an 8-point summary.
  3. Check two page numbers.
  4. Compare two companies.
  5. Run the red-flag checker.
  6. Find SEBI's intermediaries list.

Recap

In short

  1. AI is a good teacher for shares: terms, summaries and comparisons.
  2. AI cannot predict prices and can show old or wrong numbers.
  3. Upload the official report and ask for page numbers.
  4. Paste numbers yourself and check one calculation.
  5. Check every adviser on SEBI and every UPI ID with SEBI Check.
  6. Report fraud on 1930 or cybercrime.gov.in at once.

Let AI read and explain; you check the numbers, and SEBI checks the adviser. Never let a tip, or a chatbot, decide for you.

Rahul, Company A, Company B and both tips are made up, and INH000000000 is a dummy number. SEBI's F&O study for FY 2024-25, its research analyst rules on AI tools, and the SEBI Check and @valid UPI system were checked on 19 October 2026. The Python output was produced on 19 October 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Can AI predict share prices?

No. AI can explain companies and summarise reports, but nobody can reliably predict short-term prices. Be careful of any app or group that claims it can.

Which AI is best for share market analysis?

ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude all summarise reports and explain terms well. What matters more is how you use them: upload the official report, ask for page numbers and check the numbers yourself.

Is it legal to follow an AI trading group on WhatsApp or Telegram?

Taking paid stock advice from someone who is not SEBI-registered is risky and often a scam. Ask for the INA or INH number and check it on SEBI's website first.

How do I check if an adviser is SEBI registered?

Search their name or number in the recognised intermediaries list on sebi.gov.in. Before paying, check their UPI ID with SEBI Check; registered entities use @valid handles.

What should I do if I lost money to a stock tip scam?

Call 1930 or report on cybercrime.gov.in at once, and tell your bank. For a complaint against a registered broker or adviser, use SEBI SCORES.
