How to Download ChatGPT for Windows and Mac (Official App, 2026)

Download ChatGPT only from chatgpt.com/download, which detects your computer and gives you OpenAI's desktop app for Windows 10 or later (x64 or Arm, version 17763 or newer) or macOS 14 or later (Apple Silicon or Intel). Since 9 July 2026 the new desktop app puts Chat, Work and Codex in one place; the older app is still offered as ChatGPT Classic. On phones, install "ChatGPT" by OpenAI from the App Store or Google Play. The app is free to download; some features need a paid plan. Never install a "ChatGPT Plus mod APK" or a zip file from another site.

1. Suppose a "free ChatGPT Plus" link arrives on WhatsApp

Suppose Kavya gets a forwarded message: "Download ChatGPT Plus FREE for PC, full version" with a zip file link. Her laptop runs Windows 11. Should she open it? No. The official app is already free to download, so a "free full version" from another site can only be one thing: something that wants her passwords or her computer.

2. Where the official app comes from (19 October 2026)

OpenAI's download page lists macOS and Windows for the desktop app. On any other computer, the browser version works the same for chatting.

3. New app vs ChatGPT Classic

Work (agent-style tasks on your files and apps) is offered on Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise plans. Chat works with a free account. If you only want to chat, either app is fine; start with the new one.

4. Worked example 1: install on Windows

1. Open chatgpt.com/download in Edge or Chrome. The page detects Windows.
2. Click the download button for Windows.
3. Run the installer (or, if a Microsoft Store page opens, click Get). Check the publisher is OpenAI before you continue.
4. Open ChatGPT from the Start menu and sign in with your account (or create a free one).
5. Press Alt + Space to open the small companion window over any app. Ask: "Explain this error message in simple words", and paste a dummy error.

Expected output (yours will be similar, not the same): a ChatGPT window in the Start menu, and a small chat bar that appears over your other windows when you press Alt + Space, with a short plain-English explanation of the error.

If the install fails, check Settings > System > About: Windows 10 needs version 17763 or newer. Office laptops may block new installs; ask your IT team, or use chatgpt.com in the browser.

5. Worked example 2: install on a Mac

1. Check Apple menu > About This Mac: you need macOS 14 (Sonoma) or later. Apple Silicon and Intel Macs are both supported.
2. Open chatgpt.com/download in Safari or Chrome and download the Mac app.
3. Open the downloaded file and drag ChatGPT into Applications.
4. Open it and sign in. When it asks for permissions (for example to see your screen), allow only the ones you need.
5. Press Option + Space to open the chat bar from anywhere. Ask: "Turn these notes into 3 bullet points", with dummy notes.

Expected output (yours will be similar, not the same): ChatGPT in Applications, and a chat bar on Option + Space that returns 3 short bullets.

Notice the fifth link: it starts with "chatgpt.com" but the real site is "example-mirror.net". Always read the part just before the first single slash.

7. Signs of a fake ChatGPT app

• "Plus free", "premium unlocked", "mod APK" or "crack" in the name or link.
• A zip or exe file from a site that is not chatgpt.com or an official store.
• A publisher that is not OpenAI in the store listing.
• It asks for your card or OTP before you even sign in.

If you installed one: uninstall it, run a full antivirus scan, change your ChatGPT and email passwords from another device, and turn on two-step verification. If money was taken, call 1930 or report on cybercrime.gov.in.
