ChatGPT Atlas Is Retired: ChatGPT Desktop Browser vs Perplexity Comet (Windows, Mac)
ChatGPT Atlas was OpenAI’s AI browser. It only ever came out for macOS, and OpenAI retired it on 9 August 2026. OpenAI now points users to the browser built into the ChatGPT desktop app and to the ChatGPT Chrome extension. As of 25 October 2026, Perplexity Comet is a free AI browser for Windows 10/11, macOS, Android and iOS, with an optional paid Comet Plus. Any “Atlas for Windows” download is fake. Never let an AI browser fill in passwords, OTPs or payments without you watching.
Suppose Priya in Pune searched “ChatGPT Atlas Windows download” and found a site offering an .exe. Atlas never shipped for Windows, and it has now been retired even on Mac. So that file is fake. Priya instead tried Comet on her Windows laptop and the ChatGPT Chrome extension, and compared them on one real task: shortlisting three laptops under a budget.

What you will learn in this guide
- What happened to Atlas
- What replaced Atlas
- Comet on Windows and Mac
- One task in both tools
- AI browser safety rules
1. Why: AI browsers save tab-hopping
Students and office workers open twenty tabs to compare products, read docs or fill forms. An AI browser can read the page you are on and summarise or compare it. But the tool names keep changing, and fake download sites take advantage of that.
2. What: the options in October 2026
| Tool | Status and platforms |
|---|---|
| ChatGPT Atlas | Retired 9 Aug 2026; was macOS only |
| ChatGPT desktop app browser | OpenAI’s replacement; check help.openai.com for your OS |
| ChatGPT Chrome extension | Works inside Chrome sidebar |
| Perplexity Comet | Free; Windows 10/11, macOS 13+, Android, iOS |
| Comet Plus | Optional paid add-on; price on perplexity.ai |
Figure 1. Safe AI browser path in five steps: skip fake Atlas downloads, pick an official tool, try a read-only task, watch every action, and never share OTPs or passwords.
3. How: set up a safe AI browser
- Download only from chatgpt.com or perplexity.ai/comet. Ignore other sites.
- Sign in with your own account.
- Start with read-only tasks: summarise, compare, explain.
- If the agent wants to click, buy or submit, watch it and confirm yourself.
- Keep banking and email in a different browser profile.
4. What we checked (25 Oct 2026)
- OpenAI Help Center: Atlas retired 9 August 2026; desktop app browser and Chrome extension are the replacements.
- Atlas launched only for macOS; there was never a Windows build.
- Perplexity Help Center: Comet is free on Windows 10/11, macOS 13+, Android and iOS; Comet Plus is optional.
5. Worked example 1: summarise one page (start here)
Open any article, then ask the sidebar:
Summarise this page in 5 bullet points for a Class 12 student.
Then list 2 facts I should double-check.
Expected output (yours will be similar, not the same):
5 short bullets and 2 claims to verify, based only on the open page.
6. Worked example 2: compare three products
Open three laptop pages in tabs (Comet can read open tabs):
Compare the laptops in my open tabs.
Make a table: name, price shown on page, RAM, battery hours, weight.
My budget is ₹55,000. Which fits best and why? Do not buy anything.
Expected output (yours will be similar, not the same):
A small table using the prices shown on those pages, and one suggestion with a reason.
Prices change. Check the final price on the seller page yourself before paying.
7. Worked example 3: safe agent task with a stop rule
Give a clear stop point:
Find 3 English-speaking courses on Python under $50 on the open site.
Add nothing to cart. Stop and show me the list.
Never type any password, OTP or card number.
Expected output (yours will be similar, not the same):
A list of three courses with links, and the agent stops without buying.
Names, amounts and companies in the examples are made up for practice.
8. Common mistakes
| Mistake | Risk | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Downloading “Atlas for Windows” | Malware | Atlas is retired; use official tools |
| Letting the agent pay | Wrong purchase | You click pay |
| Banking in the same profile | Data exposure | Separate profile |
| Trusting every summary | Wrong facts | Open the source |
| Sharing OTP in chat | Account theft | Never |
9. Try at home
Try at home
