AI Car Photo Editing Prompts for Gemini and ChatGPT (2026): 10 Ideas, Kept Honest

To edit a car photo with AI, upload one clear photo to Gemini (Tools, then Create images) or ChatGPT and start with a Keep line: same model, colour, wheels and shape, no dents added or removed. Then change only the background, the light or the angle of the scene. Blur the number plate before you post. Never use an edited photo for an insurance claim, and for a sale listing always add one real, unedited photo.

My students love car edits: a new Swift on Marine Drive at dusk, a bike in the rain. The trouble starts when the AI quietly changes the alloy wheels, removes a scratch or invents a number plate. For an Instagram post that is only funny; for a sale or an insurance claim it is cheating. In this guide we make three car edits step by step, build the prompt with a script, and keep it honest.

Full course chapter

This guide is about car photos. For product photos that look good without faking the product, read AI Product Photos for Amazon, Flipkart and Meesho Sellers. For more photo prompts, read the guide Gemini Nano Banana Photo Editing Prompts.

What you will learn in this guide

  • The 5-part car prompt
  • A new background in Gemini
  • A colour preview before you repaint
  • A clean sale photo, done honestly
  • A prompt builder and safety check script
  • Number plates, sales and insurance rules

1. Suppose Aditya wants a cool photo of his new car

Suppose Aditya, from Thane, has just bought a white Maruti Swift. His photo was taken in the society parking, with a scooter, a water tank and a watchman's chair behind. He types "make my car look cool" into an AI app. The result looks great, but the car now has black alloy wheels, a different bumper and a made-up number plate. His friends ask, "Is that even your car?"

2. The 5-part car prompt (checked on 19 October 2026)

Part What to write Example
Keep The car must not change Same model, colour, wheels and shape; no dents added or removed
Change One change only Background: a wet road at dusk
Camera The angle of the scene Low front three-quarter angle
Light The mood Golden-hour glow with reflections
Plate and size Privacy and where you post Blur the number plate; 9:16 for Reels

In Gemini, upload the photo, or tap Tools and then Create images. Free users get the Nano Banana 2 model, and every image carries a visible Gemini mark and an invisible SynthID watermark. ChatGPT also edits photos on the free plan, with a lower image limit that OpenAI does not publish.

A car photo edit in five steps Steps from top to bottom: 1 Clear daylight photo, Front three-quarter side; 2 Keep line first, Model, colour, wheels, shape; 3 One change per message, Background, then light; 4 Check wheels, badge, plate, Blur the number plate; 5 Keep the original, Real photos for sale or claims. 1Clear daylight photoFront three-quarter side 2Keep line firstModel, colour, wheels, shape 3One change per messageBackground, then light 4Check wheels, badge, plateBlur the number plate 5Keep the originalReal photos for sale or claims

Figure 1. A car photo edit in five steps: take a clear photo in daylight, write the Keep line, change one thing per message, check the wheels, badge and plate, then keep the original for any sale or claim.

3. Worked example 1: a new background in Gemini

  1. Take a clear photo in daylight from the front three-quarter side. Upload it to Gemini.
  2. Paste:
Keep the white Maruti Swift exactly the same: same model, colour, wheels and shape.
Do not add or remove dents or scratches. Change only the background to a wet Mumbai
Marine Drive road at dusk with city lights. Golden-hour glow with reflections on the
road. Blur the number plate. 9:16 for Instagram Reels.
  1. Check three things: the wheels, the badge and the bumper. If one changed, reply: "The wheels changed. Use the original wheels from my photo."

Expected output (yours will be similar, not the same): the same white Swift on a shiny wet road with the sea and city lights behind, warm light on the bonnet, and a blurred plate.

4. Worked example 2: a colour preview before you repaint

Suppose Aditya's cousin is thinking of a wrap or repaint and wants to see the colour first.

Keep this car exactly the same in shape, wheels, glass and background. Change only
the body paint colour to deep metallic red. Keep the reflections natural. Blur the
number plate.

Expected output: the same car, same place, now in deep red. Make two or three colours and compare them side by side.

Ravindra Bagale's Tip

A colour preview is for deciding, not for documents. If you really repaint a car in India, the colour change is an alteration that must be recorded on your RC through the RTO (Parivahan's "Alteration of Vehicle" service). Never send an AI colour photo to an RTO, insurer or buyer as if it were real.

5. Worked example 3: a clean sale photo, done honestly

For an OLX or CarDekho listing, a tidy background helps, but the car must look exactly as it is.

Keep the car exactly as it is, including every scratch, dent and tyre. Change only the
background to a plain light grey studio wall and floor. Even, soft light. Do not change
the number plate area except to blur it. 4:3 landscape.

Expected output: the same car, with every mark still visible, on a plain grey background. In the listing, also post at least one real, unedited photo and write "background edited".

6. Worked example 4: build the prompt and check the use (Python)

This script builds the 5-part prompt and prints a safety note for the way you plan to use the photo.

# Build a car photo edit prompt and run a safety check before you post or use it.
def car_prompt(car, scene, angle, light, size):
return (f"Keep the {car} exactly the same: same model, colour, wheels and shape. "
f"Do not add or remove dents or scratches. Change only the background to {scene}. "
f"Camera: {angle}. Light: {light}. Blur the number plate. Size: {size}.")

def safety(use):
bad = {"insurance": "Never edit damage for an insurance claim. That is fraud.",
"sell": "For a sale listing, also post one real, unedited photo and say the background is edited.",
           "plate": "Do not change or invent a number plate."}
return [msg for key, msg in bad.items() if key in use.lower()] or ["OK for a personal post. Keep the original photo."]

print(car_prompt("white Maruti Swift", "a wet Mumbai Marine Drive road at dusk",
"low front three-quarter angle", "golden-hour glow with reflections", "9:16 for Instagram Reels"))
for use in ("Instagram post", "Sell on OLX", "insurance claim photo"):
    print(f"\n{use}:")
    for line in safety(use):
        print(" -", line)

Real output (19 October 2026):

Keep the white Maruti Swift exactly the same: same model, colour, wheels and shape. Do not add or remove dents or scratches. Change only the background to a wet Mumbai Marine Drive road at dusk. Camera: low front three-quarter angle. Light: golden-hour glow with reflections. Blur the number plate. Size: 9:16 for Instagram Reels.

Instagram post:
  - OK for a personal post. Keep the original photo.

Sell on OLX:
  - For a sale listing, also post one real, unedited photo and say the background is edited.

insurance claim photo:
  - Never edit damage for an insurance claim. That is fraud.

Change the car, the scene and the use, and run it again before you post.

7. Ten copy-paste car ideas

Start each one with the Keep line from worked example 1.

  1. Change only the background to a mountain road in the Western Ghats in the monsoon.
  2. Change only the background to a showroom with a polished floor and soft spotlights.
  3. Night scene: a city flyover with light trails behind the car.
  4. Make the car look freshly washed: shiny paint and clean tyres, no changes to dents.
  5. A Diwali photo: the car in front of a house with diyas and lights.
  6. A bike edit: keep the bike and rider's face the same; background a rainy highway.
  7. A top-down view on an empty parking lot with painted lines.
  8. A 9:16 WhatsApp Status: the car with "new car" confetti; add the words yourself.
  9. A black and white classic look; keep every detail the same.
  10. Restore an old family car photo: fix scratches only; do not change faces or the car.

8. Number plates, sales and insurance

  • Blur number plates before posting. A plate is personal information that links to the owner.
  • Never invent or change a plate in an edit you will share.
  • Sale listings: show the car exactly as it is, plus one real, unedited photo.
  • Insurance claims: use only real, unedited photos. Editing damage for a claim is fraud.
  • Other people's cars: ask the owner before you edit and post their car.

9. Beginner mistakes and quick fixes

Mistake What happens Quick fix
No Keep line Wheels and bumper change Start with the Keep line
Night or blurry photo as input Odd shapes and colours A clear daylight photo
Asking AI to add the plate or text Wrong letters Blur the plate; add text yourself
Removing scratches for a sale Buyer feels cheated Keep every mark; add a real photo
Many changes at once Messy result One change per message
Using an edit for insurance Fraud Only real photos for claims

10. Try at home

Try at home

  1. Take a clear daylight photo.
  2. Write the Keep line.
  3. Change only the background.
  4. Check the wheels and badge.
  5. Blur the number plate.
  6. Run the safety script.

Recap

In short

  1. Start with one clear daylight photo and a Keep line for model, colour, wheels and shape.
  2. Change one thing at a time: background, then light, then colour.
  3. Check the wheels, badge and bumper after every edit.
  4. Blur the number plate and never invent one.
  5. For a sale, keep every mark and add one real photo.
  6. Never use an edited photo for an insurance claim or an RTO.

Change the road, not the car. A car edit is fun only when the car is still truly yours.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best AI prompt for car photo editing?

Start with "Keep the car exactly the same: same model, colour, wheels and shape. Do not add or remove dents," then change only the background, give the light and size, and ask to blur the plate.

Can Gemini edit car photos for free?

Yes. Upload the photo in Gemini, or tap Tools and then Create images, and type your prompt. Free users get the Nano Banana 2 model, and images carry a Gemini mark and a SynthID watermark.

Why does the AI change my car's wheels or badge?

Image models redraw the whole picture. Use a clear photo, start with the Keep line and make one change per message. If the wheels change, ask again to use the original wheels.

Can I use an AI-edited car photo to sell my car?

You can tidy the background, but keep every scratch and dent, add one real unedited photo and say the background is edited. Hiding damage misleads the buyer.

Should I blur the number plate in car photos?

Yes, before posting publicly. A plate links to the owner. Never change or invent a plate in an edit.
