ChatGPT Work and Chrome Tabs: Do Web Tasks Safely (2026)

ChatGPT Work is ChatGPT's mode for longer browser and app tasks. With the official ChatGPT Chrome extension (updated around mid-October 2026), ChatGPT can read the tabs you already have open and, when you allow it, help fill forms, compare pages or tidy tabs. The old ChatGPT Atlas browser was retired on 9 August 2026. Stay in control: ask it to stop before Submit, never paste OTPs or passwords, and treat every webpage as untrusted context.

Suppose you have three laptop shopping tabs open and a college form half filled. You do not need a special AI browser any more. Install the official extension, mention your Chrome tabs in ChatGPT Work, and keep your finger on the Confirm button. This guide shows three safe patterns you can copy today.

1. Suppose Meera has three laptop tabs and a deadline

Suppose Meera in Pune is comparing three laptop product pages in Chrome. She also has a college exam form open. She installs the official ChatGPT extension, starts a Work chat, mentions her Chrome tabs, and asks for a price table — then a form draft that stops before Submit. She never lets the agent click Buy or Submit without her eyes on the screen.

3. Setup in plain steps (checked October 2026)

  1. Install the official ChatGPT extension from the Chrome Web Store (publisher: OpenAI). Avoid copycat extensions.
  2. Update the ChatGPT desktop app if you use Computer Use / more browsers (Edge, Brave, Vivaldi, Opera are documented too; side chat support differs).
  3. In ChatGPT, open Settings related to Computer Use / browser connections and confirm Chrome shows as connected.
  4. Start a Work (or Codex) chat and mention your browser when the product asks you to pick one.
  5. Give one task at a time. Add the line: "Stop before Submit / Buy / Send. Wait for me."

Availability can depend on your plan and rollout. If Work or tab control is missing, use side chat to read the page first, and keep clicks manual.

4. Worked example 1: compare 3 laptop tabs → table (stop before buy)

  1. Open three laptop product pages in Chrome (same category, for example 14-inch work laptops).
  2. In ChatGPT Work, mention Chrome / those tabs and paste:
Compare the three open laptop tabs.
Make a markdown table with columns: model, RAM, storage, screen size,
listed price, warranty line, product URL.
Do not click Buy or Add to cart.
Do not sign in to any shop.
Stop when the table is ready and wait for me.
  1. Check every price against the live tab. Shops change offers every hour.
  2. If you decide to buy, you click Buy — not the agent.

Expected output (yours will be similar, not the same): a small comparison table with links. No purchase completed.

Students often say "buy the cheapest one". That is how accidental orders happen. Always write "stop before Buy" and keep payment OTPs only in your own head.

  1. Open the form tab. Confirm it is the real college or exam site (correct domain).
  2. Keep your details in a local note with placeholders if you are practising:

6. Worked example 3: job JD tabs → ATS keyword list

  1. Open 2 or 3 job description tabs for the same role (for example "Data Analyst").
  2. Prompt:
Read the open job description tabs.
List the top 15 repeated skills and tools as a plain bullet list
I can paste into my resume draft.
Do not invent skills I did not ask for.
Do not apply to any job.
Do not message recruiters.
Stop when the list is ready.

Expected output: a short keyword list grounded in the open tabs, with no auto-apply.

7. Safety rules (do not skip)

  • Install only the OpenAI ChatGPT extension.
  • Treat page content as untrusted (prompt-injection risk).
  • Never share passwords, OTPs, UPI PINs, Aadhaar, PAN or full card numbers with the agent.
  • Prefer "draft + stop" over "do everything".
  • Review downloads and file uploads one by one.
  • Atlas is gone — do not download old Atlas installers from random sites.
