SUMIFS with Dates: Total Between Two Dates or for One Month

Ravina has ten sales rows from 28 August to 2 October 2026. Her manager asks: “What did we sell in September?” Adding by hand means picking seven rows and skipping three. SUMIFS with two date conditions does it in one cell: ₹8,450.

SUMIFS adds a column for rows that meet every condition. For dates you give two conditions on the same date column: on or after the start date (">="&start) and on or before the end date ("<="&end).

Download the practice file (sumifs-with-dates.xlsx)

Excel file, 6 KB. It has the sample data used below. All numbers in this workbook are fictional teaching data, not real company figures.

Quick answer

  1. Type the start date in F1 (01-09-2026) and the end date in F2 (30-09-2026).
  2. In F4 type =SUMIFS(C2:C11,A2:A11,">="&F1,A2:A11,"<="&F2).
  3. Press Enter. The answer is 8450.
  4. Change F1 and F2 to any other range; the total updates.
=SUMIFS(C2:C11,A2:A11,">="&F1,A2:A11,"<="&F2)

30-09-2026Pune1000
01-10-2026Pune1800
02-10-2026Kolhapur600

Read the formula slowly

  1. C2:C11 is what to add (Amount).
  2. A2:A11,">="&F1 keeps dates on or after 1 September.
  3. A2:A11,"<="&F2 keeps dates on or before 30 September.
  4. The & joins the sign and the date, because the condition must be one piece of text like >=46266.
  5. Seven rows pass both tests: 1500 + 800 + 2200 + 950 + 1300 + 700 + 1000 = 8450.

QuestionFormulaAnswer
First week of September (1 to 7)=SUMIFS(C2:C11,A2:A11,">="&DATE(2026,9,1),A2:A11,"<="&DATE(2026,9,7))4500
September, Pune only=SUMIFS(C2:C11,A2:A11,">="&F1,A2:A11,"<="&F2,B2:B11,"Pune")6000
Whole month from one date in F5 (01-10-2026)=SUMIFS(C2:C11,A2:A11,">="&F5,A2:A11,"<="&EOMONTH(F5,0))2400
Number of September sales=COUNTIFS(A2:A11,">="&F1,A2:A11,"<="&F2)7

EOMONTH(F5,0) gives the last day of the same month (31-10-2026), so you only type the first day of the month.

Common mistakes

  • Typing the date inside quotes, like ">=01/09/2026". It depends on your computer's date setting and can silently give 0. Use a cell or DATE(2026,9,1).
  • Dates stored as text (they sit on the left of the cell). Fix them first with Data > Text to Columns > Finish or DATEVALUE.
  • Dates with a time part. "<="&F2 drops a sale at 30-09-2026 3:00 PM. Use "<"&F2+1 for the end date instead.

Ravindra Bagale's Tip

Keep the start and end dates in cells at the top of the report, not inside the formula. Then the same report works for any month by changing two cells.

Practice task

  1. Open the Sales sheet. Check that F4 shows 8450.
  2. Change F2 to 07-09-2026. Expect 4500.
  3. Put F2 back to 30-09-2026 and check F6 (Pune only) shows 6000.
  4. Type 01-08-2026 in F5. The month total in F7 shows 1200.
  5. Write a COUNTIFS that counts October sales. Expect 2.

Frequently asked questions

How do I SUMIFS between two dates?

Use two conditions on the same date column: ">="&start and "<="&end.

Why does my SUMIFS with dates return 0?

Usually the dates are text, or the date inside quotes does not match your regional format. Use cells or DATE().

How do I total a whole month?

Use the first day in a cell and EOMONTH(cell,0) for the last day.

Can I use TODAY() in the condition?

Yes, for example ">="&TODAY()-7 for the last seven days. The answer then changes every day.
