54. NLP vs ChatGPT: Classical NLP and Generative AI
54.1 Same Task, Two Tools
Why. After classical sentiment, teams ask: "Why not just use ChatGPT for everything?" You need a clear compare — cost, control, data size, and job fit.
What. Classical NLP (this block): local sklearn models on your labelled text, predictable features, cheap CPU. Generative AI: large language models that generate or judge text via APIs (or big local models) — flexible language, different cost/privacy profile.
How.
Same Mauli task, two tools
- Classical: TF-IDF + LogisticRegression on 5,000 labelled reviews offline.
- Gen AI: prompt an LLM to label or draft a reply for a new complaint.
- Both can be valid — pick by volume, latency, privacy, and budget.
compare = {
"classical": "fit once on your labels; predict offline; explain via tokens",
"gen_ai": "prompt/API; strong language; watch cost, privacy, drift",
}
