33. Linear Regression in Python with sklearn
33.2 Fit, Intercept and Coefficient Intuition
Why. Before you call fit, you should know what the model is learning: a starting value (intercept) and how much y changes when a feature moves (coefficients).
What. For one feature: ŷ = intercept + coef × x. Intercept is the model’s guess when x is 0 (often not a real flat — treat it as a math anchor). Coef is “₹ change per extra sqft” in our rent story.
How.
Picture the line
- Plot (or imagine) area on X-axis, rent on Y-axis.
- A line crosses the Y-axis at the intercept.
- The tilt of the line is the coefficient.
- sklearn picks intercept and coef to make training errors small (least squares — you do not derive it by hand here).
# Intuition only — numbers made up for teaching
intercept = 3000 # ₹ when area is 0 (math only)
coef = 20 # about ₹20 extra rent per sqft
area = 800
guess = intercept + coef * area
print("Guess rent for 800 sqft:", guess)
What you should see. 19000. Real fit will find better numbers from many rows. Multi-feature models add more coefs: one per column in X.
Ravindra Bagale's Tip
Intercept 0 asla tari tension nahi — feature 0 meaning real-world madhe navhte. Coef chi direction bagha (positive/negative).
