29. What Is Machine Learning (Simple Explanation)
29.2 Machine Learning vs Data Analytics vs Generative AI
Why. Interview and WhatsApp groups mix three words: analytics, machine learning, and generative AI. If you mix them, you pick the wrong tool for a Pune ops question.
What.
- Data analytics — summarise what already happened (mean order ₹, top city, last week’s returns). Chapters 1–23.
- Machine learning — learn patterns from past labelled (or unlabelled) rows and predict for new rows.
- Generative AI — create new text, images or code from prompts (ChatGPT-style). See the separate Gen AI course on this site.
How.
Pick the right lane
- Question is “What was Solapur’s median basket last week?” → analytics (pandas).
- Question is “Will this new order likely arrive late?” → machine learning (later chapters).
- Question is “Draft a polite WhatsApp to the customer about delay” → generative AI tool.
- Say the lane out loud before you open Jupyter or ChatGPT.
Comparison table (keep this).
| Lane | Input | Output | Example (fictional) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Analytics | Past table | Summary / chart | “Pune delivered 412 orders; median ₹172.” |
| Machine learning | Past table (+ labels) | Guess for a new row | “Order BLK-99: late risk = high.” |
| Generative AI | Prompt + context | New text / image / code | “Write a delay apology in English.” |
