41. What Is a Neural Network (Simple Explanation)
41.2 Neurons and Layers Analogy
Why. “Neuron” sounds biology-heavy. In ML it is a tiny calculator.
What. One neuron does roughly: multiply inputs by weights, add a bias, then apply an activation (Chapter 42). A layer is many neurons side by side. “Deep” means several hidden layers.
How.
Kitchen analogy (India)
- Ingredients = input features (litres, complaints, pixel values).
- Recipe weights = how much each ingredient matters.
- Tasting spoon = activation (keep / squash the signal).
- Many cooks in a row = deep network.
# Toy one-neuron math (not PyTorch yet)
x1, x2 = 2.0, 3.0
w1, w2, b = 0.4, -0.1, 0.5
z = w1*x1 + w2*x2 + b
print("pre-activation z =", z)
What you should see. A single number z. Next chapter wraps z with activations like ReLU.
