51. What Is Natural Language Processing (NLP)
51.1 NLP in Daily India Apps
Why. Shops and apps drown in text: WhatsApp complaints, Amazon Now reviews, call-centre notes, UPI dispute comments. Numbers alone cannot read "dahi sour aahe" or "delivery late again". NLP is how computers work with human language.
What. Natural Language Processing (NLP) turns text into something models can use — clean tokens, counts, vectors — then classifies, searches, or summarises. Classical NLP (this block) uses cleaning + TF-IDF + sklearn. Generative AI (ChatGPT-style) comes later as a different lane.
How.
Spot NLP in daily India apps
- Review sentiment: "pedha fresh" vs "packing kharab".
- Spam / abuse filters on comments.
- Search: find tickets that mention "refund" without reading every row by hand.
- Routing: send "cold chain" complaints to the dairy ops queue.
reviews = [
"Dahi packaging was torn. Not happy.",
"Fresh pedha, on-time delivery from Pune hub.",
]
print("NLP starts with text like this — not a tidy litres column.")
for r in reviews:
print("-", r)
