Gemini Code Assist Is Now Antigravity: How to Set Up Google Antigravity in VS Code
Google moved its free coding assistant to a new product called Antigravity. If Gemini Code Assist stopped working for your personal Google account, this is the new way to get Google's AI in VS Code.
In short: from 18 June 2026, Gemini Code Assist for individuals (and Google AI Pro/Ultra) stopped working in the IDE and Gemini CLI. Install the Google Antigravity extension instead and sign in with your Google account.
Why this changed
Google joined its coding tools into one agent platform called Antigravity. The old Gemini Code Assist extension still exists for company plans (Standard and Enterprise), which have their own schedule. Personal users must move.
What is what
- Google Antigravity: Google's agent platform for coding. It has an app, a CLI, a standalone IDE, and extensions for VS Code, JetBrains, Visual Studio, Zed and Xcode.
- Antigravity for VS Code: the VS Code extension. Agent side panels, inline diffs and plans you can inspect.
- agy: a small local background service the extension installs on first launch.
- Gemini Code Assist Standard/Enterprise: the company version. It follows a separate deprecation schedule.
- Who is affected: personal Google accounts on Gemini Code Assist for individuals, Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra.
How setup flows
Install steps
- Open VS Code. Check Help → About: version 1.90 or later.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+X (Mac Cmd+Shift+X) to open Extensions.
- Search Google Antigravity (publisher: Google). Click Install.
- Click the Antigravity icon in the Activity Bar (left side) to sign in.
- Sign in with your Google account. Any Antigravity plan works, including the free tier.
- On first launch it installs the local
agyservice. Let it finish. - Moving from Gemini Code Assist? Uninstall or disable the old Gemini Code Assist extension so the two do not clash.
Settings
- Open Ctrl+, → Extensions → search Antigravity to see its options.
- Privacy: read the privacy and data settings for your plan before using company code.
- Company users: if your company has Gemini Code Assist Standard/Enterprise or Gemini Enterprise, ask your admin which tool and sign-in to use.
Configuration
- Keep project rules in a short AGENTS.md file in the repo root (language, test command, files not to touch). Check the Antigravity docs for the rule files it reads.
- Keep secrets out of the project folder (use
.env+.gitignore).
First task (5 minutes)
- Open a small project and one file.
- In the Antigravity panel ask: “Explain this file in simple words.”
- Then: “Add input checks to this function and a unit test.”
- Review the inline diff. Keep only what you understand.
- Run the tests yourself.

Save tokens and money
Free tiers have quotas. Ask small, clear tasks, point at one file at a time, and start a new chat for new work so old history is not re-sent.
