How to Set Up GitHub Copilot in Xcode (Step by Step)
On a Mac you can use GitHub Copilot inside Xcode for Swift and SwiftUI. You install the official GitHub Copilot for Xcode app, grant macOS permissions, sign in with GitHub, then use completions and (on current builds) chat / agent features from Xcode.
In short: install Copilot for Xcode from GitHub’s docs or the github/CopilotForXcode releases, enable Accessibility + Xcode Source Editor extension permissions, restart Xcode, sign in, and look under Editor → GitHub Copilot. Shortcut labels can change — check the in-app cheat sheet.
Why Copilot in Xcode
iOS and macOS apps are built in Xcode. Copilot there suggests Swift as you type and can help with small refactors without switching to another editor.
What you need
- Mac + Xcode: GitHub’s current docs: recent Xcode (commonly Xcode 14+) and a supported macOS. Confirm the matrix on docs.github.com before you upgrade.
- GitHub Copilot plan: Free or paid Copilot on a GitHub account that is allowed to use Copilot.
- GitHub Copilot for Xcode: standalone Mac app + Xcode Source Editor extension (not the VS Code extension).
- Permissions: Accessibility (live suggestions), Extension permission, often Background / Files — missing one is the #1 “it does nothing” cause.
How setup flows
Install steps
- Open GitHub’s guide: Install Copilot in Xcode (docs.github.com → Copilot → set up → Xcode tool tab).
- Download / install the latest GitHub Copilot for Xcode build from the official GitHub instructions (releases for
github/CopilotForXcode). - Open the GitHub Copilot for Xcode app from Applications and follow the on-screen setup.
- Enable Accessibility when prompted (System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility).
- Click Extension Permission in the Copilot app and enable GitHub Copilot under Xcode Source Editor. On newer macOS the path is under Login Items & Extensions (exact clicks change by macOS version).
- Allow background activity for the Copilot app if macOS asks.
- Quit and reopen Xcode.
- Confirm a GitHub Copilot item appears under the Editor menu.
- Sign in / authorize with your GitHub account that has Copilot.
Settings
- Use the Copilot for Xcode app’s settings for updates, sign-out, and feature toggles.
- Completions: grey suggestions appear as you type. Accept shortcuts differ from VS Code — Tab may accept one line; Option+Tab (or the labeled keys in the menu) may accept more. Read Editor → GitHub Copilot.
- Chat / Agent: current Copilot for Xcode builds include chat and agent-style help; menus move between versions — open the GitHub Copilot menu and the in-app docs.
- If suggestions stop: Check for Updates in the Copilot app, confirm all permissions, then restart Xcode.
Configuration tips
- Keep API keys out of source — use xcconfig / Keychain / environment, never paste secrets into chat.
- Prefer small prompts on one file or selection.
- For project standing rules, keep a short README or CONTRIBUTING note; Xcode does not use the same
.github/copilot-instructions.mdUX as VS Code in every build — verify what your version reads.
First task (5 minutes)
Write a Swift function isEven(_ n: Int) -> Bool with a simple XCTest. Keep it in the selected file only.
// Teaching sample — verify in XCTest on your Mac
func isEven(_ n: Int) -> Bool {
n % 2 == 0
}- Create a tiny Swift package or use an existing test target.
- Trigger a completion or ask via Copilot chat (if available in your build).
- Run the XCTest in Xcode (Product → Test).
- Reject anything that touches signing, provisioning, or secrets.
| Symptom | Likely fix |
|---|---|
| No ghost text | Accessibility off, or extension not enabled |
| Menu missing | Restart Xcode after enabling the Source Editor extension |
| Auth errors | Re-sign in; check org Copilot policy |
| Flaky connection | Enable Background for Copilot for Xcode |
- Only install Copilot for Xcode from GitHub’s official instructions.
- Do not grant Screen Recording unless you knowingly use a vision feature and trust it.
Quick quiz
1. Is the VS Code Copilot extension enough for Xcode?
No. Xcode needs GitHub Copilot for Xcode (Mac app + Source Editor extension).
2. Name two required permission types.
Accessibility, and Xcode Source Editor extension (plus often Background).
3. Where do you look after a successful install?
Editor → GitHub Copilot in Xcode.
4. Why restart Xcode?
So the Source Editor extension loads.
Save tokens and money
Ask for one function + one test. Do not paste provisioning profiles or customer data into chat.
