Which AI Is Best per Language (Python, JS, Java…)

“Best AI for Python” is not the same as “best AI for Swift.” This page gives practical tips per language for October 2026 — no fake benchmark scores.

In short: use the tool that fits your IDE and language first (Copilot in Xcode for Swift, IntelliJ for Java, VS Code/Cursor for many stacks). Then pick a strong model for hard design, and prove every answer with tests.

Why language changes the answer

WHY

Models see public training data unevenly. Python and JavaScript examples are everywhere. Niche C++ build flags, SwiftUI lifecycle details, or old PHP frameworks need tighter prompts and stronger IDE help. Your editor and test runner matter as much as the model name.

What to decide first

WHAT
  • IDE fit: Swift without Xcode help is painful. .NET shines in Visual Studio / Rider. Android needs Android Studio.
  • Test command: Tell the AI how you run tests (pytest, node --test, mvn test, cargo test).
  • Language rules: Pin the version (Python 3.12, Java 21, Go 1.22) so the AI does not invent old APIs.
  • Privacy: Company code → company-approved tool or local Ollama; do not paste secrets.

How to pick per language (flow)

1 · Open your real IDE not a random chat tab 2 · State language + version in the prompt or rules file 3 · Prefer IDE-native tool Copilot / Claude Code / Cursor 4 · Escalate hard tasks stronger model + Plan 5 · Run language tests proof beats brand

Practical tips by language (Oct 2026)

LanguageOften works wellPractical tip
PythonClaude, ChatGPT/Codex, Copilot, Cursor, local qwen-coderAsk for type hints + pytest. Pin 3.12+. For money, demand Decimal.
JavaScript / TypeScriptsame set; Cursor/VS Code excellentSay Node version. Prefer node --test or vitest. Ask for strict TypeScript.
JavaCopilot in IntelliJ, Claude Code, ChatGPTState Java 21 (or your LTS). Demand JUnit 5. Check Maven/Gradle coordinates.
C# / .NETCopilot in Visual Studio, ChatGPT, ClaudeSay the TFM (net8.0). Use xUnit/NUnit. Watch old .NET Framework APIs.
GoClaude, ChatGPT, Copilot in VS Code/GoLandAsk for table tests and go vet. Ban invented package names.
PHPClaude, ChatGPT, CopilotPin PHP 8.x. Prefer PHPUnit. Insist on prepared statements for SQL.
C / C++Claude, ChatGPT, CopilotDemand -Wall clean builds. Ask for ownership/lifetime notes. Test with assert or GoogleTest.
Kotlin (Android)Copilot in Android Studio, Claude, Gemini/Antigravity where availablePoint at Compose vs Views. Never hard-code API keys in prompts.
SwiftGitHub Copilot for Xcode; ChatGPT “work with apps” on MacConfirm Mac + Xcode version. Ask for XCTest. Re-check Apple API names.
RustClaude, ChatGPT, Copilotcargo test + clippy. Ask the AI to explain lifetimes it introduces.
SQLany solid chat + your schemaPaste schema only, never production rows. Prefer parameterised queries.
Bash / PowerShellClaude, ChatGPT, CopilotRequire set -euo pipefail (Bash) or $ErrorActionPreference='Stop'. Dry-run first.
Rule: we do not publish invented win rates. Model names and IDE plugins change. Re-run a small bake-off on your own repo every few months.

How to bake-off in one language

HOW
  1. Pick one real function in that language and write the failing test first (or copy one).
  2. Give the same prompt to two tools you already have (example: Copilot Chat and Claude Code).
  3. Score only: tests pass, style matches the project, no mystery imports.
  4. Write the winner + date in the team README (“Python default: … — Oct 2026”).
PER-LANGUAGE PROMPT (COPY)

Language: ___ version ___. Task: ___. Constraints: no new dependencies; follow existing style in @file. Deliver: code + tests. Run command: ___.

Settings tip

  1. Put language version and test command in CLAUDE.md, AGENTS.md or .github/copilot-instructions.md.
  2. In Copilot / Cursor, keep a cheap default for autocomplete; switch to a stronger model for design chats.
  3. For Grok or DeepSeek in VS Code, Continue is the usual bridge (see our Ollama + Continue guide for the local pattern).

Quick quiz

1. Is one AI best for every language?

No. Match the IDE, language version, and prove with that language’s tests.

2. What should you put in project rules?

Language version, test command, and “no secrets / no mystery deps”.

3. Best first check for Swift work?

Use a real Mac + Xcode path (Copilot for Xcode or ChatGPT with apps), then XCTest.

4. How do you pick for your team?

A dated bake-off on one real task, scored by tests.

Save tokens and money

SMART AI USE

Do not send the same huge prompt to five models for a rename. Compare on one small task. Keep language version in rules so you are not re-explaining it every chat.

Generic chat vs IDE tool

Generic chat: fine for snippets; weak project context.
IDE tool: sees files, runs tests, fits the language workflow.
