How to Set Up GitHub Copilot in Eclipse (Step by Step)
Many college and Java shops still use Eclipse. GitHub Copilot has an official Eclipse plugin with completions, chat, and (in current builds) agent-style help — you need Eclipse 2024-03 or newer and a Copilot plan (Free or paid).
In short: install Copilot from the Eclipse Marketplace or the GitHub update site, restart Eclipse, click Copilot in the bottom-right status area, sign in with a device code on GitHub, then accept suggestions and open chat.
Why Copilot in Eclipse
If your lab or office standardises on Eclipse, you should not have to switch editors just to try AI. Copilot brings completions and chat into the same workbench you already know.
What you need
- Eclipse 2024-03+: GitHub docs: version 2024-03 or above. Prefer a current 2025/2026 package if your lab allows it.
- GitHub account + Copilot plan: Free tier has monthly limits; Pro/Business/Enterprise unlock more. Confirm limits on github.com — do not invent numbers.
- Network: Browser access for the device-code sign-in.
- Update site (fallback): If Marketplace drag-install fails: Help → Install New Software with the official Copilot update site URL from GitHub docs / Marketplace.
How setup flows
Install steps
- Confirm Eclipse version: Help → About Eclipse IDE. Upgrade if older than 2024-03.
- Option A — Marketplace: open the GitHub Copilot listing on marketplace.eclipse.org and use Drag to Install, or search inside Eclipse Marketplace client.
- Option B — Update site: Help → Install New Software… → Add… → paste the Copilot update site URL from the official Marketplace/docs page (starts with the Azure CDN host GitHub publishes). Select GitHub Copilot → Next → Finish.
- Restart Eclipse when prompted.
- In the bottom-right of the workbench, click Copilot → Sign In to GitHub.
- Click Copy Code and Open. Paste the device code in the browser, Continue, then Authorize GitHub Copilot Plugin.
- Return to Eclipse and click OK when it confirms. Try typing in a
.javafile until ghost text appears.
Settings
- Use the Copilot status entry to sign out, disable completions, or open chat (labels move slightly between plugin versions).
- Prefer the stable Marketplace listing for class machines; Nightly builds exist but can be unstable.
- If two AIs fight (for example another completion plugin), turn one off.
Configuration
First-task reminder# Copilot in Eclipse — first task shape # After sign-in, open a .java file and type a comment: # // return true if s is a valid 6-digit India PIN shape (digits only) # Accept a completion, then write a tiny JUnit test yourself.
- Keep project instructions short in comments or a README the team already uses — do not invent secret-laden config files.
- Agent / MCP features depend on your Copilot plan and plugin version — if a button is missing, you still have completions + chat on supported builds.
First task (5 minutes)
In chat: Write a Java 17 method isValidPin(String s) that returns true only when s has exactly 6 digits. No network calls. Then I will write the JUnit test.
- Accept or paste the method into a class.
- Write a small JUnit test yourself (or ask Copilot for test stubs, then edit).
- Run the test. Reject any suggestion that reads password files.
| Path | Notes |
|---|---|
| Marketplace drag-install | Easiest when the Marketplace client works |
| Install New Software + update site | Reliable when drag-install is blocked |
| Nightly update site | Newer fixes; not for every lab PC |
- Do not paste .env, passwords, or real customer data into Copilot Chat.
- Company policy may require Copilot Business with content exclusion.
