Google AI Studio Build Mode: Make an App Free from a Prompt
Build mode in Google AI Studio (aistudio.google.com) turns a written description into a working app with a live preview. As of 25 October 2026, Google’s docs say it can build React/Node web apps and Kotlin Android apps, and you keep improving it by chatting. Publish deploys to Google Cloud Run; eligible Starter-tier users can deploy up to 2 apps without billing. API keys stay on the server side, not in the browser. Check the docs for current limits before relying on it.
Suppose Prachi, a teacher in Aurangabad, wants a vocabulary quiz app for her class, and Sam in Cape Town wants a simple expense splitter for flatmates. Each describes the app in five lines, tests the preview, asks for two fixes, and publishes.

What you will learn in this guide
- What Build mode makes
- Write a good app prompt
- Edit by chat
- Publish to Cloud Run
- Keep keys and data safe
1. Why: an idea to a working app in minutes
Many people have small app ideas but no time to learn a framework. Build mode gives a working first version you can test and improve.
2. What: key facts
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| App types | React/Node web apps; Kotlin Android apps |
| Edit | Chat to change features or design; view code |
| Publish | Deploys to Cloud Run |
| Free deploys | Eligible Starter tier: up to 2 apps without billing |
| Keys | Kept server-side |
Figure 1. Build mode app in five steps: open Build, describe, test the preview, ask for fixes, publish.
3. How: make your app
- Go to aistudio.google.com and open Build.
- Describe who uses the app, the inputs, the outputs and the look.
- Test the preview with three real inputs.
- Ask for one change at a time.
- Click Publish only when it works; read the Cloud Run screen.
4. Source
- Google AI Studio docs for Build mode and deploying (checked 25 Oct 2026).
- Limits and tiers can change; check before publishing.
5. Worked example 1: vocabulary quiz (start here)
Paste into Build:
Build a simple web app for Class 6 students.
Teacher pastes 10 English words. App makes a 10-question
multiple-choice quiz with meanings, shows score at the end,
and has a "Try again" button. Big fonts, mobile friendly.
Expected output (yours will be similar, not the same):
A preview with a text box, a Generate button, quiz cards and a score screen.
6. Worked example 2: expense splitter
Paste into Build:
Build an app to split shared flat expenses.
Add people and expenses (who paid, amount, for whom).
Show who owes whom with the fewest payments.
Currency selector: INR, ZAR, USD. No login, no saving to a server.
Expected output (yours will be similar, not the same):
A preview with people list, expenses form and a "settle up" table, e.g. "Sam pays Priya R250".
Names and amounts are made up.
7. Worked example 3: fix by chat
After testing, ask:
The score screen shows NaN when I skip a question.
Count skipped questions as wrong and show "Skipped: n".
Do not change anything else.
Expected output (yours will be similar, not the same):
The preview updates; skipping now shows "Skipped: 1" and a correct score.
Names, amounts and companies in the examples are made up for practice.
8. Common mistakes
| Mistake | Risk | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Huge first prompt | Messy app | Start small |
| Collecting student personal data | Privacy risk | No names or phones |
| Publishing untested | Broken app | Test three inputs |
| Pasting API keys in the prompt | Leak | Never |
| Assuming unlimited free hosting | Bill surprise | Check tier limits |
9. Try at home
Try at home
- Build the quiz app.
- Ask for one fix.
- Share the preview with a friend.
