Read this guide in: English ·

VLOOKUP + FALSE = exact match। Tiny Mumbai/Pune kirana sheet, before/after, फिर formula।

Vertical steps:

  2. Result cell select करो।
  3. =VLOOKUP(lookup_cell, table_array, col_index, FALSE) टाइप करो।
  6. Enter — exact match; ID न मिले तो #N/A।
=VLOOKUP(E2, A2:B6, 2, FALSE)

Before और after (पहले tables देखो)

Product ID Price (₹)
P101 40
P102 25
P103 60

Before VLOOKUP exact match Three products with prices before lookup.

Before

After VLOOKUP exact match Exact match returns price 25 for P102.

After

VLOOKUP + FALSE

  1. Product IDs और city names को exact match चाहिए।

VLOOKUP = Vertical LOOKUP। Range के पहले column में नीचे जाता है, key मिला तो आपके बताए column number की तरफ़ दाएँ कदम।

Formula parts (छोटा)

=VLOOKUP(E2, A2:B6, 2, FALSE)
  2. A2:B6 — table; IDs column A, prices column B।
  4. FALSE — exact match।

Suppose Pune kirana price list:

Product ID Price
P101 40
P102 25
P103 60
  1. Excel E2 = P102
  4. उस row का column 2 → 25।
  5. E2 = P199 (missing) → #N/A।

Vertical practice steps

  2. E1 = Product ID, E2 = P102।
  3. F1 = Price।
  4. F2 = =VLOOKUP(E2,A2:B4,2,FALSE)।
  5. E2 = P101 → 40।
  6. E2 = P999 → #N/A (expected)।

Common mistakes

Symptom अक्सर कारण Fix
#N/A ID missing / typo / extra space Key ठीक करो; TRIM

Ravindra Bagale's Tip

Product codes, city names, phone-plan codes — हमेशा FALSE।

Practice task

  1. पाँच-row product list (ID + Price) बनाओ।

Samajla ka? Missing key → #N/A। आगे XLOOKUP try करो।

Frequently asked questions

What does FALSE mean in VLOOKUP?

FALSE (or 0) means exact match only. Excel returns a value only when the lookup key matches a cell in the first column of the table array.

What is the VLOOKUP formula shape?

VLOOKUP(lookup_value, table_array, col_index_num, [range_lookup]). For beginners always use FALSE as the last argument.

Why do I get #N/A?

Usually the ID is missing, misspelled, has extra spaces, or the key is not in the leftmost column of the table array.

Can VLOOKUP look to the left?

No. The return column must be to the right of the key column. Use INDEX+MATCH or XLOOKUP when you need left lookup.

Approximate match vs exact?

TRUE or 1 is approximate (sorted lists, slabs). For product IDs and city names use FALSE.
