Chapter 13: Monitoring Basics

13.5 Node Exporter — expose host metrics

In short: Node Exporter runs on the machine you want to watch and serves metrics in Prometheus text format.

Node Exporter runs on the machine you want to watch and serves metrics in Prometheus text format.

Conceptual flow:

  1. Install or run Node Exporter (binary, package, or container).
  2. Confirm metrics URL responds (often http://localhost:9100/metrics).
  3. Point Prometheus scrape_configs at that target.
# Sketch — verify exporter is up (adjust host/port to your install)
curl -s http://127.0.0.1:9100/metrics | head

What you see: many lines like node_filesystem_avail_bytes{...} and node_cpu_seconds_total{...}. You do not memorise every metric name on day one — you learn the families you graph.

Ravindra Bagale's Tip

Exporter public internet var open sodu nako. Lab madhe localhost / private network. Security group = shop door — kontya counters open. Bilkul visru naka!
