Chapter 13: Monitoring Basics

13.1 Why monitor — dashboard before the outage call

A bike without a fuel gauge teaches you a lesson on the highway. Software without metrics teaches you a lesson at peak traffic.

Monitoring means collecting numbers about a system over time (CPU, memory, request rate, error rate, disk free) and watching them so you notice trouble before customers flood the support chat.

Why it matters for an Instagram-style badge API : when the badge API slows or the lab VM disk fills, you want a dashboard and one calm alert — not twenty panic messages and a guess.

Flying blind Monitoring habit
"App feels slow" Latency and error rate on a chart
"Maybe disk is full?" Disk used % with a threshold
Firefight only Trend before the cliff

Ravindra Bagale's Tip

Monitoring = graphs + alerts + action. Screenshot collection without runbook — interview madhe weak. Kay baghtos, kay karto — donhi sanga. Lakshat theva!
