1.5 CALMS — five ideas in plain English
Teams often summarise DevOps culture with CALMS. Memorise the letters, then explain each in one sentence.
| Letter | Word | Plain English | Instagram-style line |
|---|---|---|---|
| C | Culture | Shared goals; no "throw over the wall" | One team owns badge from laptop to users |
| A | Automation | Repeat boring steps with scripts and pipelines | Every push runs tests |
| L | Lean | Small batches; cut waste | Ship one endpoint at a time |
| M | Measurement | Watch build time, error rate, deploy frequency | Alert when error rate rises |
| S | Sharing | Docs, runbooks, post-incident notes | README explains how to roll back the last image tag |
CALMS is a compass, not a certificate. You can use Docker and still fail CALMS if nobody watches production or shares the runbook.
Ravindra Bagale's Tip
Interview madhe khup students CALMS path kartat pan example nahi detat. Pratyek letter sathi ek real-world line ready theva — "Automation = GitHub Actions runs tests on every pull request." Bilkul visru naka.
Practice task
Draw a five-row table for CALMS. In each row write one habit you will practise in this course (for example "Measurement = note how long my first pipeline takes").
