AI Mock Interview: Practise HR and Technical Questions with ChatGPT

Generative AI course · Chapter 21 · Estimated reading time: 12 minutes

Most freshers prepare for interviews by reading lists of "top 50 questions". Then the real interviewer asks one follow-up question, and the memorised answer falls apart. Practice beats reading, and AI is a patient practice partner: it can play the interviewer, ask one question at a time, wait for your answer, and tell you exactly what was weak. In this chapter you will run an HR round, an AWS technical round and a feedback round with ChatGPT, then practise out loud with voice. You will also learn the one rule that keeps this honest: AI is for practice, never for the real interview.

What you will learn in this chapter

  • The interviewer prompt: one question at a time
  • Run an HR round and get feedback
  • Run a technical round and check the facts
  • Score your answer with a simple rubric
  • Rewrite answers in your own words
  • Practise out loud with ChatGPT Voice or Gemini Live
  • The honesty rule for real interviews

1. Suppose the interview is on Thursday

Suppose we are Pooja, a BCA fresher from Nagpur. We have an interview on Thursday for a Cloud Support Associate job at Cloudline Services. There will be an HR round and a technical round on AWS basics.

We open ChatGPT and type:

Give me interview questions for cloud support associate

We get 25 questions with model answers. We read them twice and feel ready. But nobody asked us anything. We never said an answer out loud, and nobody told us that our "Tell me about yourself" takes 4 minutes and says nothing.

The better way: make the AI interview us, one question at a time, and give honest feedback after each answer.

2. The interviewer prompt

A good practice prompt has 5 parts:

  1. Role: who the AI plays (an HR manager, a technical lead).
  2. Job: the job title and 3 or 4 lines from the job post.
  3. Rules: one question at a time, wait for my answer, ask a follow-up when my answer is vague.
  4. Feedback: after each answer, a score and the 2 most important fixes.
  5. Stop word: when I type "END", give a summary of my strong and weak points.
One question, your answer, feedback, then your own better answer Steps from top to bottom: 1 Set the role, Interviewer, job post, rules; 2 One question, The AI asks and waits; 3 Your answer, Typed first, then out loud; 4 Score and 2 fixes, No model answer unless asked; 5 Your better answer, Your own words, try again. 1Set the roleInterviewer, job post, rules 2One questionThe AI asks and waits 3Your answerTyped first, then out loud 4Score and 2 fixesNo model answer unless asked 5Your better answerYour own words, try again

One question, your answer, feedback, then your own better answer

Here is the prompt as a template. Copy it and fill the brackets:

You are an interviewer for the job of [job title] at a company in India.
Job post (short): [3-4 lines from the real job post]
My background: [degree, 1-2 projects, internship if any]

Rules:
- Ask ONE question at a time, then wait for my answer.
- If my answer is vague, ask one follow-up question before moving on.
- After each answer, give: a score out of 5, what was good (1 line),
and the 2 most important fixes. Keep feedback under 80 words.
- Do not write a full model answer unless I type "SHOW".
- When I type "END", summarise my 3 strong points and 3 weak points.

Start with the first question.

Why the "no model answer" rule? If the AI writes a perfect answer every time, you will start copying it. You learn more when you fix your own answer.

3. Worked example 1: the HR round

Prompt (filled in):

You are an HR interviewer for the job of Cloud Support Associate at a company in India.
Job post (short): Help customers with AWS issues by chat and email. Good English
communication. Basic knowledge of Linux, networking and AWS. Freshers welcome.
My background: BCA 2026, college project on a library website hosted on an AWS EC2
instance, 1-month internship in a local computer repair shop.

Pooja answers the first question in the chat:

I am Pooja. I did BCA. I am hardworking and a quick learner. I like computers.
My hobbies are reading and music.

Expected output (yours will be similar, not the same):

Score: 2/5
Good: Short and clear.
Fixes:
1. "Hardworking and quick learner" are claims with no proof. Replace them with
one example: your EC2 library project or your internship.
2. Connect yourself to this job. Say why cloud support interests you.

Follow-up: You mentioned you like computers. What did you do in your internship
that helped a real customer?

Pooja tries again, in her own words:

I am Pooja, a 2026 BCA graduate from Nagpur. In my final-year project I hosted a
library website on an AWS EC2 instance, and I learnt how security groups control
who can reach a server. In my internship at a computer repair shop, I explained
problems to customers in simple words. That is why cloud support fits me: I enjoy
solving technical problems and explaining them clearly.

The second answer is 70 words, about 30 seconds when spoken, and every claim has proof.

Ravindra Bagale's Tip

Students practise "Tell me about yourself" by reading a paragraph from the screen. In the real room they forget it after one line. Do not memorise sentences. Memorise 3 points (degree, one project, why this job) and say them in fresh words every time you practise.

4. Worked example 2: the technical round, with a fact check

For a technical round, change the role and ask for questions from the job post:

You are a technical interviewer for a Cloud Support Associate (AWS) job.
Ask me beginner AWS and networking questions, one at a time, based on
this job post: [paste the same 3-4 lines].
Same rules as before: score out of 5, 2 fixes, no model answer unless I type SHOW.
If my answer has a technical mistake, say exactly which sentence is wrong.

Suppose the AI asks: "What is the difference between a security group and a network ACL?" Pooja answers:

A security group works at the subnet level and a network ACL works at the
instance level. Both are stateful.

Expected output (yours will be similar, not the same):

Score: 1/5
Wrong sentences:
1. "A security group works at the subnet level" - it is the other way round.
Security groups apply to instances (their network interfaces); network ACLs
   apply to subnets.
2. "Both are stateful" - security groups are stateful (return traffic is allowed
automatically). Network ACLs are stateless (you must allow return traffic).
Try again in 2-3 sentences.

This feedback is correct, and you can check it in the AWS VPC documentation, which describes security groups as stateful and network ACLs as stateless. Always check technical feedback against the official documentation or your course notes. The AI can be wrong too, and an interviewer will not accept "ChatGPT told me".

A simple way to check: open a new chat and ask, "Is this statement correct? [paste the AI's feedback]. Answer with a link to official AWS documentation." Then open the link and read the line yourself.

5. Worked example 3: score one answer with a rubric

Sometimes you want deep feedback on one important answer, like "Tell me about a time you solved a problem". Use the STAR shape: Situation, Task, Action, Result.

Prompt:

Score my interview answer with this rubric, 1 to 5 for each:
- Structure (Situation, Task, Action, Result)
- Specific details (numbers, names of tools, what I did myself)
- Length (60-120 seconds when spoken)
- Relevance to a Cloud Support Associate job
Then tell me the ONE change that would improve it most. Do not rewrite it.

My answer:
"In my internship a customer's laptop was not connecting to Wi-Fi. I checked
the settings and fixed it. The customer was happy."

Expected output (yours will be similar, not the same):

Part Score Why
Structure 3 Situation and result are there; the task and the steps are missing
Specific details 1 "Checked the settings" does not say what you checked
Length 2 About 10 seconds; too short
Relevance 3 Troubleshooting fits, but the link to cloud support is not said

The one change: describe your steps in order (for example: what you checked first, what you found, what you changed), because support jobs are about step-by-step troubleshooting.

Now Pooja rewrites the answer herself, with the real steps she took, and pastes it again for a new score. Two or three rounds are enough.

6. Practise out loud with voice

Typing an answer is not the same as saying it. Real interviews are spoken, so finish every practice with voice.

ChatGPT Voice:

  1. Open the ChatGPT app.
  2. Paste your interviewer prompt as a normal message first.
  3. Tap the voice button next to the message box.
  4. Answer each question out loud. Ask for feedback at the end of each answer.

Voice chats are limited on the free plan (the ChatGPT pricing page says "Limited voice chats"), so keep sessions short and focused.

Gemini Live (free, in the Gemini app on Android and iPhone):

  1. Open the Gemini app.
  2. Tap the Live button.
  3. Say: "Act as an HR interviewer for a fresher cloud support job. Ask me one question at a time and give feedback after each answer."
  4. Answer out loud. Say "stop" or tap end when you are done.

Gemini Live works in the mobile app, not on the website.

Tip for voice practice: record yourself once with your phone's voice recorder while you answer. Listen back. Most people hear their "umm" and long pauses for the first time this way.

7. The honesty rule

AI is your practice partner, not your secret helper.

  • Never use an AI tool during a real interview or an online test, for example by reading answers from a second screen. Most companies treat this as cheating, and interviewers are trained to notice it.
  • Do not claim skills the AI suggested if you have not used them. The follow-up question will find out.
  • If you do not know an answer in the real interview, say so honestly and explain how you would find out. That is a good answer for a support job.

8. Privacy while practising

  • Paste the job post, not internal company documents or an offer letter.
  • Use your first name only. You do not need your phone number, address or college roll number for practice.
  • Do not paste a friend's resume or answers without asking them.

9. Beginner mistakes and quick fixes

Mistake What happens Quick fix
Asking for a list of questions and answers You read, but never practise Make the AI ask one question at a time
Memorising the AI's model answer You freeze at the first follow-up Memorise 3 points, say fresh words each time
Trusting technical feedback blindly You learn a wrong fact Check against official documentation
Practising only by typing Spoken answers are too long or too short Finish with ChatGPT Voice or Gemini Live
No feedback rules in the prompt Vague praise like "Great answer!" Ask for a score and the 2 most important fixes
Using AI in the real interview Rejected, and your name is remembered AI for practice only

10. Try at home

Try at home

Task 1: HR round

  1. Copy the interviewer prompt and fill in a real job post you like.
  2. Answer 3 questions in the chat.
  3. Rewrite your weakest answer in your own words and get a new score.

Task 2: technical round

  1. Ask for 5 beginner questions on one topic you studied (for example AWS, Excel or Python).
  2. For any feedback that corrects you, find the line in official documentation or your notes.

Task 3: voice

  1. Do 3 questions out loud with ChatGPT Voice or Gemini Live.
  2. Record one answer on your phone and listen to it once.

Recap

In short

  1. Reading question lists is not practice. Make the AI interview you, one question at a time.
  2. The interviewer prompt: role, job post, rules, feedback format and a stop word.
  3. Ask for a score and the 2 most important fixes, not a full model answer.
  4. Memorise 3 points per answer, not sentences.
  5. Check every piece of technical feedback against official documentation.
  6. Use the STAR shape and a rubric for your most important answers.
  7. Finish with voice: ChatGPT Voice (limited on free) or Gemini Live (free, mobile app).
  8. AI is for practice only, never during a real interview or test.

Pick one job post today and do a 10-minute practice round. One honest round of feedback teaches more than reading 50 questions.
