Chapter 02 · SAP S/4HANA, BTP & ERP
SAP S/4HANA in Plain English
S/4HANA is SAP’s modern ERP suite; HANA is the in-memory database underneath.
Why this matters
Job posts say S/4HANA everywhere. You only need the big picture first: business suite + faster data platform + simpler structures in many areas. Deep config comes after you know processes.
What you will learn
You will compare “old scattered reports” vs “live operational data”, hear what on-premise vs cloud deployment means at a high level, and note that migration projects are multi-year efforts — not weekend courses.
How to do it
Keep reading public SAP Road Map / learning materials for details. We stay conceptual.
Steps (do these in order)
- Step 1 — Name split. S/4 = the application suite. HANA = the database technology. Together: S/4HANA.
- Step 2 — Why firms move. Support timelines, simpler data models in places, analytics closer to transactions — business cases vary.
- Step 3 — Deployment sketch. Private cloud, public cloud, on-premise flavours exist. Beginners should know the words, not size hardware.
- Step 4 — UI direction. Fiori apps are the modern face (next chapters). Classic GUI still appears in many landscapes.
- Step 5 — Your learning stance. Process first (order, invoice, stock move), transaction codes second.
Practice
- Explain S/4HANA in six spoken sentences as if to a non-IT manager.
- Note one difference between “module config” and “ABAP custom code” at a high level.
