Chapter 12: Terraform Introduction
12.2 Providers, resources and state
| Word | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Provider | Plugin that talks to an API (AWS, etc.) |
| Resource | One object you manage (aws_security_group, aws_instance, …) |
| Data source | Read existing info without owning it |
| State | Terraform's memory of what it created and tracks |
# versions.tf (sketch)
terraform {
required_version = ">= 1.5.0"
required_providers {
aws = {
source = "hashicorp/aws"
version = "~> 5.0"
}
}
}
provider "aws" {
region = var.aws_region
}
Authentication for labs usually uses the same AWS credentials/profile pattern you already use for CLI in the AWS course (environment variables or shared config). Prefer short-lived keys or SSO patterns your school/account recommends — do not paste access keys into .tf files.
